Early Postsecondary Opportunities (EPSO)

IS YOUR STUDENT A READY GRADUATE?

What is a ready Graduate?

In 2015, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) was passed, which changed the way schools are held accountable. One of the indicators the State now measures when scoring school effectiveness is how prepared a graduate is to enter college or career. Students who meet certain requirements are considered a "Ready Graduate".

What are the Requirements?

In order for a senior to be considered a Ready Graduate, they must meet ONE of the following criteria:

  • ACT Composite score of 21 or higher
  • 4 Early Post Secondary Opportunities (EPSOs)
  • 2 EPSOs & an industry certification
  • 2 EPSOs & a 31 on the ASVAB AFQT (Military Entrance Exam)

What is an EPSO?

An Early Post Secondary Opportunity (or EPSO) is a high school course or program that allows a student to gain college credit or industry certification. In order for an EPSO to count, a student must take the applicable exam. Types of EPSOs include:

  • Advanced Placement (AP)
  • Dual Enrollment (DE)
  • International Baccalaureate (IB)
  • Career and Technical training
  • Statewide Dual Credit

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO MAKE SURE YOUR STUDENT IS READY:

Review Course Offerings at your child's school.

Discuss with your student their interests and find courses that align with their career aspirations. Make sure they are proactively signing up for those classes and on track to be a Ready Grad.

Take advantage of ACT Prep Opportunities.

Don't wait until junior year to start preparing for the ACT. Many schools offer free tutoring, classes, and practice tests so your student can be as prepared as possible when it really starts to count.

Make sure your students meet with their counselor.

Students should start discussing EPSO options with their counselor by their sophomore year in order to ensure they are enrolled in the correct courses.
