District Reinstates 37 Pre-K Classrooms for 2013-14, Parents Urged to Apply Now for Limited Space

June 10, 2013 1932 views

Memphis, Tenn. - Thirty-seven prekindergarten (Pre-K) classrooms have been reinstated for the 2013-14 school year to boost the number of 4-year-olds the unified district can accommodate this fall. The district reopened 12 classrooms at school sites and 25 at community partner centers, allowing it to now serve a capacity of 3380 Pre-K children. Since space is limited and the timeframe to enroll is brief, parents across Memphis and Shelby County are strongly urged to apply now during Phase II of the enrollment process, June 11 - 27.

The Pre-K program is a proven school-readiness initiative helping children to be adequately prepared for kindergarten. Priority is given to families meeting low income guidelines.

From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on specific days between Tuesday, June 11 and Thursday, June 27, parents residing in the city or county who want to enroll their child in Pre-K classes must visit one of five (5) school sites representing each region of the new Shelby County Schools District.

*See the listing of Pre-K screening sites/dates, as well as a complete list of schools or partner locationswhere Pre-K classes will be offered at the end of this release, or visit: http://www.scsk12.org/prek/.
Applications are available in both English and Spanish and will be reviewed on a first come, first served basis.

To enroll, children must:

  • reside in Memphis or Shelby County
  • turn four years old on or before August 31 (one month earlier than in previous years as governed by the State of Tennessee), and
  • be screened to determine eligibility

On screening day, parents must bring:

  • proof of income (very important),
  • a certified birth certificate (plus one copy),
  • two proofs of residency,
  • the child's social security card (plus one copy) and
  • the child's health and immunization records on the Tennessee School Form.

"For decades, research-based evidence has proven that high-quality Pre-K programs increase a child's chance for academic success in the school years and beyond," said Carolyn Harvey, EdD, the district's expert in Pre-K education. Dr. Harvey adds, "We offer a rigorous, innovative curriculum. Several classes are now equipped with iPads for use by the 4-year-olds and some provide interactive Smart Board technology. We also offer effective ESL (English as a Second Language) instruction for our Spanish speaking population." For more information about Pre-K enrollment requirements or the screening period, June 11 - 27, call the Pre-K Office at (901) 416-3450 or visit http://www.scsk12.org/prek/.
