Check out these awesome opportunities for our students to earn prizes, grants and scholarships for their hard work and awesome ideas! Click on each title for more information. 

 

Helicopter 2050 Challenge

The Sikorsky Helicopter 2050 Challenge is open to youth between the ages of 9-16 who envision the helicopter of the future and describe how it might be used to use sustainable, environmentally friendly design. One Grand Prize winner will receive the "Igor Sikorsky Youth Innovator Award," a $1,000 scholarship, and a trip to Sikorsky headquarters in Stratford, CT to attend the award presentation and tour the facility. In addition, 4 finalists will each receive a Sikorsky "prize pack." Deadline: October 15, 2015.

 

YoungArts Awards

The National YoungArts Foundation sponsors an annual scholarship and awards contest for youth artists in the U.S. Awards are available for students aged 15-18, and they're available in a variety of artistic disciplines, including the performing arts, dance, visual arts, writing, and photography. To apply, artists must submit an audition, portfolio or materials related to their discipline. Winners receive an invitation to National YoungArts Week events, a cash prize up to $10,000, access to scholarship opportunities, and more. Deadline: October 16, 2015.

 

SYTA Youth Foundation Road Scholarship

The SYTA Youth Foundation established the Road Scholarship program in 2002 to award funds to youth who, for various reasons, are unable to afford the cost of their group's travel. Based on the belief that travel is essential to a complete education, it is the SYTA Youth Foundation's goal to make a positive difference, through travel, in the young lives of our global citizens. Since its inception, the SYTA Youth Foundation has awarded over a thousand scholarships to deserving youth. Scholarships are awarded based on the applicant's circumstances and need as documented in the completed application form.  The scholarship amount varies on a case-by-case basis, depending on the cost of specific trips, the demonstrated need of the applicant, and the number of applicants in a given application period. The average Road Scholarship granted is $750.00. No more than $1,000 will be awarded to a single student. Application Period: September 1, 2015, through October 19, 2015.

 

Angela Award

This award honors one female student in grades 5-8, who is involved in or has a strong connection to science. The award has been established in honor of Gerry Wheeler, Executive Director Emeritus, and his outstanding dedication to NSTA and lifelong commitment to science education. The award is a $1,000 US EE Savings Bond. The awardee will be honored at the Teacher Awards Banquet at NSTA's National Conference. Deadline: November 30, 2015.

 

ACM/CSTA Cutler-Bell Prize in High School Computing

Each year, the Prize in High School Computing recognizes the most talented high school students in computer science. To participate, graduating seniors complete a computing challenge that allows them to showcase their computing skills. This year, participants are asked to develop "an artifact that engages modern computing technology and computer science." Judging will be determined on the "ingenuity, complexity, relevancy, and originality" of the project. Four $10,000 prizes available. Winners also receive a trip to the ACM/CSTA Cutler-Bell Prize in High School Computing Reception in February 2016. Deadline: January 1, 2016.

 

Hot Planet/Cool Athletes Powder Grants

Students have a chance to win $5,000 for their school to create their own green programs. Whether it's building a recycling or composting program, a clean energy initiative or a developing plan to encourage local elected officials to support clean energy, the sky is the limit. At the end of the year, a representative from the top two winning proposals will travel to Washington D.C. to share project information with elected officials. Deadline: January 15, 2016.

 

Do Something Disaster Grants

Do Something Disaster Grants fund project ideas and existing projects that assist people in emergency situations - everything from disaster preparedness to first responders to those who are still working hard to rebuild months or years later. Applicants must be under the age of 25. One award of $500 will be given each week. Great projects include those that do something about food insecurity, help soldiers returning from active duty, rebuild communities after natural disasters, or provide resources for those afflicted by a crisis. No set deadline.

 

Karma for Cara

The Karma for Cara Foundation is encouraging kids 18 and under to apply for funds between $250 and $1,000 to complete service projects in their communities. Whether it is turning a vacant lot into a community garden, rebuilding a school playground or helping senior citizens get their homes ready for winter, they want to hear what project you’re passionate about. Deadline: Rolling.

 

WaysToHelp.org Grants

WaysToHelp.org invites teens in the United States to apply for grants to fund their community service ideas across any one of 16 issue areas. Applications are short - just 5,000 characters or less - and should summarize: how the project will involve others, who it will help, what effect it's expected to have, when it will start and how the funds will be used. Grant requests are reviewed and responded to on a monthly basis. No set deadline.
