Each year, the U.S. Department of Health and its Family & Youth Services Bureau recognize February as Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. With Valentine’s Day around the corner, it’s important not to lose sight of an issue that impacts nearly 1.5 million high school students each year.

This year, the District’s Department of Coordinated School Health will hosts its second annual Healthy Relationship’s Day to spread awareness on the reality of domestic violence in our community.

Tennessee ranks sixth in the highest rates of women murdered by men in domestic violence disputes, according to data from the Violence Policy Center, and we know that patterns of domestic violence begin earlier than adulthood. Events like the Domestic Violence Awareness Rally serve to educate, provide resources and offer both students and parent a chance to come together to dialogue and learn how to put a stop to the cycle of abuse in our community.

In addition to the domestic violence program, the District also offers a number of resources to students and parents that may have been victims abuse through our school counselors, mental health clinics and various community partners.
