As the FIRST graduating class of Memphis-Shelby County Schools prepares to take a big step toward their future, their resilience and empowerment are shining through as inspiration for students across the District. These scholars have gone above the norm and remained steadfast on their academic journey, even when faced with challenges. As we celebrate the astonishing young men and women who are on their way to accomplishing their college and career goals, we are sharing the stories of some of the extraordinary seniors that demonstrate the strength and determination of the #MSCSFirstCla22.

Karla Davila was born and raised in Memphis and currently attends White Station High School. As a Spartan, she has received numerous academic recognitions throughout her high school career, became a member of the National Honor Society, and will be graduating with a 4.1 GPA. She has exemplified her leadership abilities as the Spanish Honor Society's Vice President and is part of two Hispanic leadership programs, Abriendo Puertas and Entre Mujeres. Her participation in these two empowering programs has provided her with the tools necessary to continue excelling in the academic and professional competitiveness of the 21st century. Upon graduation, Karla will attend the University of Memphis, where she will pursue her Bachelor's in Political Science and Minor in Spanish.
After obtaining her degree, Karla plans on attending law school and sees herself running a law firm practicing immigration law. She finds inspiration in these words, "No te rindas, lo bueno toma tiempo." (Do not give up, good things take time). This quote has served her as a reminder to continue pushing forward despite how difficult things might seem.
What has been your favorite part about being at White Station High School?
My favorite part of being in high school is the connections I have made with teachers and friends. These are connections that have marked my life. I am blessed to have the opportunity to make connections with so many people, especially in a school where everyone is so different; you cannot find two people the same, and I think that is something beautiful.
How has White Station High School prepared you for future success?
High school has taught me to mature and to take responsibility for my actions. There are no ifs, ands, or buts. My high school has shaped us to give it our all and stand up for ourselves, which is what I plan to implement in my life and career.
Have there been any MSCS teachers/employees that have made a big impact on you?
Many teachers have impacted my life in every way possible, but the teacher who nominated me, Mrs. Leslie Thornton, has had the most significant impact. She gives me something that makes her stand out. She has helped me with so many things in my life, from deciding what I should do about college to deciding what prom dress I should buy. I admire her work as a teacher and her willingness to help youth in any way she can. I admire her as a woman because she has worked so hard to be where she is, to be a teacher with her master's. I strive to have the same dedication she gives to her career.
How have the teachers at White Station High School helped you get to where you are today?
The teachers here have given an insight on how my high school education has shaped my life and how I will incorporate what I have learned in college. Many have also taught me how to positively manage stress.
What advice would you have for an incoming freshman?
If you are the type of person that needs mental breaks, take them. Trust me, they are essential.
