Early Voting Kicks Off in Shelby County, Oak Forest Elementary Hosts Student Mock Election

Memphis, TN - As early voting begins in Shelby County today, students at Oak Forest Elementary got a head start in civic engagement with their mock presidential election. Organized by the entire school and Mrs. Timkia Bryant, the school's PLC Coach and Title I Coordinator, the event gave students hands-on experience in democracy. "Today, our students are practicing and exercising their right to vote. It's a great way for them to engage, especially with the historic election in November," Bryant explained.

The mock election required months of preparation. A "Mock Election Committee" led the effort, holding meetings, designing ballots, and decorating the polling area to create an authentic experience. Teachers also integrated lessons on citizenship, government, and civics before the event to ensure students understood the importance of voting. Fifth graders took on leadership roles, acting as the Election Commission and guiding younger students through the process, gaining first-hand experience in electoral responsibilities.

Students eagerly embraced the experience. Fourth grader Max shared, "It's important to vote to express yourself." His classmate Dylon added, "We learned how to vote. It was a good simulation of how it will work." Events like this build students' understanding of civic duties and inspire them to become active participants in their communities.
