District 1: Maxine Smith STEAM Academy Principal Named STEM Educator of the Year

Memphis, TN— At a prestigious awards ceremony held last night, Principal Andy Demster of Maxine Smith STEAM Academy was honored with the title of STEM Educator of the Year, presented by the Greater Memphis IT Council. This award celebrates outstanding contributions in the field of STEM education, recognizing educators who inspire and prepare the next generation for a technology-driven future.

Demster was among three nominees in the category, which included educators from notable institutions such as the University of Memphis and KIPP schools. This year marks a significant achievement for Demster, who was nominated last year but did not win, demonstrating his commitment and perseverance in the field of education.

During the ceremony, Demster shared his inspiration for focusing on education and the importance of maintaining passion in his role. “Information technology is the future,” he stated. “We have to equip our kids to think about tomorrow because technology evolves rapidly. Innovative thinking is critical to providing our students with the best chance of being successful.”

One of the standout initiatives implemented at Maxine Smith STEAM Academy is the unique curriculum that distinguishes it as the only school in Tennessee where every student participates in three years of coursework in essential STEM areas. This curriculum includes robotics, coding, computer science, structural engineering, and bioengineering, culminating in a unit on green energy. Demster emphasized that the curriculum is regularly updated to reflect the most recent advancements in research and technology, ensuring students are learning cutting-edge skills.

Furthermore, the academy offers extended learning opportunities, providing students with real-world experiences. Demster elaborated, “We aim to expose our students to what technology is available in the field. Each week, 26 buses transport students to various locations where they can engage with their projects in practical settings.”

Demster’s leadership and innovative approach to STEM education have set a benchmark in Memphis, paving the way for future generations to excel in a world increasingly defined by technological advancements. His recognition as STEM Educator of the Year highlights the vital role educators play in shaping the future of education and technology.
