Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) Superintendent Dr. Marie N. Feagins asked staff to come together for a Day of Service on Monday, November 25. Students from John P. Freeman Optional School responded by volunteering at three local organizations – Dorothy Day House, Porter Leath, and Memphis City Beautiful Commission.

At Dorothy Day House, students helped clean the facilities to maintain housing while people without shelter stay in a safe environment. During their visit to Porter Leath, students read to prekindergarten students. In a video shared by John P. Freeman on Facebook, pre-K students looked happy and interactive. Alongside the Memphis City Beautiful Commission, students helped clean up litter along Tulane Road. To beautify the area near their schools, students picked up garbage and tires along the road. They gave a special shoutout to Michael Harris for facilitating the neighborhood beautification project while the Memphis Police Department safely blocked off the road for cleanup.
John P. Freeman Optional School perfectly represented the District’s call to service by volunteering with local nonprofit organizations and local governmental agencies.
