Treadwell Elementary Optional School is making history as Tennessee’s only K-5 Spanish-English Dual Language Program. This groundbreaking initiative not only prepares students for a globally connected future but also fosters cultural awareness, diversity, and academic success.
The program integrates both English and Spanish instruction across all subject areas, allowing students to become fluent in both languages by the time they leave fifth grade. The benefits are far-reaching: students gain cognitive advantages, better problem-solving skills, and increased confidence in communicating with a diverse range of people.
One student who embodies the program’s success is Kayden, a bright and enthusiastic third grader. Kayden shared his excitement about the program, saying, “I’m capable of speaking Spanish. I’ve never given up.” For Kayden, learning Spanish is about more than mastering a new language – it’s about building bridges. “It helps me be friendly to everyone. I don’t care who it is,” he added with a proud smile.
The program is about much more than academics. It’s about empowering students to see themselves as global citizens. Together, they cultivate a rich, inclusive learning environment that celebrates both languages and cultures.
For Kayden and his classmates, the dual language program is more than just a curriculum – it’s a life-changing opportunity. In his words: “I feel like I can talk to anyone now.”
Treadwell Elementary Optional School is truly shaping the next generation of leaders, one word – and one connection – at a time.
