Leading with Compassion: Principal Jocelyn Mosby Recognized by Memphis City Council Member

In honor of National Principals Month, Memphis City Councilman JB Smiley recognized Jocelyn Mosby, principal of Oakhaven High School, for her outstanding leadership, dedication, and service to the students, teachers, and families of Memphis.

A proud product of legacy Memphis City Schools, Principal Mosby always knew she wanted to be an educator. Though she did not initially envision herself in leadership, mentors encouraged her to step into new roles. Over her career, she has served as an English teacher, PLC Coach, and Assistant Principal before becoming principal at Booker T. Washington High School, where she served for 14 years. For the past seven years, she has led Oakhaven High School, continuing her passion for serving students and guiding fellow educators.

At Oakhaven, Mrs. Mosby has worked to create a culture of trust, warmth, and community. Each morning, she personally greets students, setting a positive tone for their day. Beyond daily leadership, she also hosts events that bring students and families together, such as the “Annual Tea and Ties”, an event that emphasizes unity, companionship, and connection across the school community. Her focus on relationship-building extends into her partnership with parents. She describes her approach as “co-parenting,” working side by side with families to build strong relationships that ensure students feel fully supported. This philosophy has created a climate of shared responsibility and collaboration, making Oakhaven a school where students thrive both academically and socially.

Her leadership has helped Oakhaven sustain its Level 5 status year after year, a testament not only to student success but also to the strength of her team. “I’m most proud of the camaraderie among my teachers,” Mrs. Mosby said. “Watching them grow professionally and seeing our alumni reconnect with the school shows how far the community has come together.”

Being recognized during National Principals Month carries a deeply personal meaning for Mrs. Mosby. She views it as a tribute to her late father, who supported her throughout her educational journey and remains a source of inspiration. Professionally, she sees the honor as a reflection of her entire Oakhaven community: “This recognition is for all of us. My teachers, staff, and students lift me up every day and allow me to lead with transparency, care, love, and resilience.”

Mrs. Mosby lives by the motto “Failure is not an option,” a belief rooted in Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” She encourages other principals and educators to find joy in the role and to continue fostering a culture of care where everyone feels valued and appreciated.

Her journey from dedicated educator to Oakhaven High School principal stands as a powerful reminder of what dedicated leadership can accomplish. With vision, resilience, and faith, Principal Jocelyn Mosby has left an indelible mark on her school and community, embodying the very spirit of National Principals Month.
