Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) is celebrating a major accomplishment at Sheffield High School after junior JROTC cadet Ibrahima Thiam earned a perfect score on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB), one of the most competitive assessments for military career placement. Ibrahima, an ESL student originally from Senegal, has been a JROTC cadet since 2024 and is known for his respectful attitude, punctuality, and strong discipline.
Another student, Bay Cokhna, scored a 99 on the ASVAB, further highlighting the dedication and academic strength of Sheffield High’s JROTC cadets.
Sgt. Marcus Hunt said the achievements show how engaged students are in the program. “It encourages others to join JROTC and even consider enlisting after graduation,” he said. He added that Ibrahima’s focus and work ethic set him apart. “He completes every task without hesitation and is already working to create a peer mentorship program for fellow cadets,” Sgt. Hunt shares.
Sgt. Hunt and Major Darryl Cox credit Principal Kimberly Greer and school leadership for pushing students academically and keeping momentum strong.
“JROTC is about developing better citizens, and that helps our students excel in all areas,” Sgt. Hunt said. These accomplishments come as Sheffield High strengthens partnerships with the Coast Guard, Army, and Navy, giving students direct exposure to military careers and pathways.
Ibrahima’s success motivates other cadets to aim higher on the ASVAB and strengthen their academic performance. For students who want to follow his lead, Sgt. Hunt encourages them to ask questions, stay curious, and take advantage of the opportunities available at Sheffield High. Sgt. Hunt and Major Cox also invite families and community members to visit the JROTC program and see students’ work firsthand.
In addition to supporting high school cadets, the instructors teach eighth graders at American Way Middle School twice a week and lead several service-learning projects. The program is currently hosting a canned food drive, and a toy drive at Sheffield as they enter the holiday season.
Ibrahima’s achievement reflects the strength of the Sheffield JROTC program and the supportive school community surrounding him and his fellow cadets. His success continues to inspire students, uplift the work of MSCS’ JROTC programs across the District, and contribute to Sheffield High School’s growing culture of excellence and service.
