MSCS Launches First District-Wide Choir for Students in Grades 6–12

Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) is proud to announce an exciting new opportunity for young performers across our district. This year, MSCS is launching its first District-Wide Choir for students in grades 6 to 12 (ages 12 to 18). The initiative, championed by District 7 School Board Member Towanna Murphy, will bring talented singers from every school together to showcase the power of music, collaboration, and community.

This new choir was designed to support students who attend schools without a choir or students who have not yet participated in an activity but have the talent and interest to shine. It aims to provide a welcoming space for students who may be shy, unsure, or new to the performing arts. The goal is to complement existing choir programs while giving every student access to a creative outlet.

“We are bringing our students and our community together in a powerful way,” said Murphy. “This choir is more than music. It is about celebrating talent, hard work, and the pride of being part of MSCS.”

Led by Choir Director, David Armstrong and supported by MSCS music teachers, community partners, and local artists, the District-Wide Choir will prepare to perform at events and venues throughout Shelby County and, eventually, nationwide. Students will receive high-quality musical instruction, opportunities to collaborate with peers from across the district, and the chance to shine on stages they may not have previously had access to.

This initiative is intended to encourage students to strengthen their academic performance and attendance through increased engagement, structure, and positive peer involvement. While many school-based choirs require a minimum GPA, the District-Wide Choir is removing that requirement with the intention of making the arts available to as many students as possible.

Removing the GPA requirement doesn’t mean academics will take a backseat. The program will include weekly rehearsals, with a dedicated homework and study period from 5 to 6 p.m., followed by rehearsals from 6 to 8 p.m. This schedule is designed to help students stay on top of their schoolwork while pursuing their passion for music.

Students are invited to register and take part. The District-Wide Choir will not only create unforgettable musical experiences but will also help students build confidence, leadership skills, friendships, and school pride.

When our students sing together, they remind us of the strength, unity, and spirit that make our district special. This new ensemble aims to uplift our schools and inspire families, staff, and community members alike.
