Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) is turning up the volume on literacy with "Read Around the Radio,” a new district-wide initiative that celebrates student creativity, storytelling, and the joy of reading aloud.
Rooted in one of Interim Superintendent Dr. Roderick Richmond’s 5 A’s, Arts, the program inspires students to strengthen their literacy skills through creative expression and storytelling. By engaging students in reading, writing, and performing their own original works, it nurtures imagination, builds confidence, and amplifies the authentic voices of MSCS scholars. Each story reflects the artistry, diversity, and brilliance of the next generation of Memphis storytellers.
Through “Read Around the Radio,” MSCS students in grades K–12 are invited to submit original short stories, essays, or creative pieces to be featured on MSCS Radio, 88.5 FM. Selected entries are brought to life by district leaders, educators, community partners, and special guest readers who will share students’ words across the airwaves, celebrating creativity, literacy, and collaboration throughout Memphis. Those interested in participating as guest readers can contact partnerships@scsk12.org.
“Elevating MSCS student voice through the Read Around the Radio partnership fosters literacy by making listening and reading engaging and accessible for families,” said Alisha Kiner, Deputy Chief Academic Officer. “When students hear their own stories shared by community leaders, it sparks creativity and pride, while strengthening connections between schools and Memphis neighborhoods. This initiative transforms reading into a shared experience that builds confidence and community.”
How It Works
Teachers and families are encouraged to help students and submit their work. Selected stories will be professionally recorded and aired on 88.5 FM, with additional features on the MSCS website, YouTube, and social media channels.
Through “Read Around the Radio,” MSCS is amplifying student voices and reinforcing the district’s commitment to literacy, creativity, and community connection, one story at a time.
