Inclusion Through Opportunity: Mikale Thomas’s Journey at White Station High

White Station High School sophomore balances athletics, academics, and inclusion while inspiring others through determination and heart.

At White Station High School, sophomore Mikale Thomas is building a life defined by determination, discipline, and compassion. In recognition of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) is spotlighting Mikale, a 10th-grade student whose journey reflects perseverance, inclusion, and opportunity. Through athletics, academics, and community involvement, Mikale continues to demonstrate what is possible when students are supported and encouraged to pursue their passions.

Mikale maintains a full schedule that includes school athletics, AAU basketball, taekwondo, and academic studies. At White Station, he plays basketball and is also recognized as one of the school’s most successful bowlers. He is also a member of ArtFlow, a club designed to help neurodivergent students express themselves through art and explore creativity in a supportive environment.

Beyond school, Mikale participates in Special Olympics, competing in track, flag football, basketball, and bowling. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he began taekwondo and is now preparing to test for his third-degree black belt. For Mikale’s mother, Shameka Thomas, Ed.S., what stands out most is not simply his accomplishments but his character.

“The proudest thing for me is his heart,” Ms. Thomas said. “He has a heart of gold.” She said Mikale’s compassion shows in everyday moments. When he sees someone in need, he wants to help, whether by offering encouragement, sharing a meal, or simply showing kindness. While his journey has not always been easy and some once doubted what he could accomplish, Mikale has continued to grow with strong family support and meaningful opportunities. “We have a thing with Mikale that your disability doesn’t define your capability,” Ms. Thomas said. “Never let anybody tell you what you can’t do.”

Sports have played a key role in Mikale’s confidence and development. Through basketball, he has built friendships, strengthened his skills, and discovered a sense of belonging among his peers. “I think it’s given him the ability to belong, to be part of a world that many students with disabilities don’t always get the chance to experience,” Thomas said. “It allows him to be seen, heard, and recognized.”

Academically, Mikale is also thriving. He maintains strong grades and continues to grow in the classroom, particularly in math and science, where hands-on learning allows him to excel. Looking ahead, he hopes to pursue an inclusive higher education program after graduation, allowing him to experience college life while continuing to build independence and life skills. For Ms. Thomas, one message stands above all. “Don’t underestimate them,” she said. “Their disability does not define their capabilities.”

Stories like Mikale’s reflect the District’s commitment to creating inclusive learning environments where every student can discover their strengths and pursue their goals. Through supportive programs, dedicated educators, and opportunities in academics, athletics, and the arts, MSCS continues to ensure that students of all abilities have access to the resources and encouragement needed to follow their pathway to greatness.
