Discovering Memphis - MSCS’ $3 million investment funds free field trips to local landmarks

Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) is launching its Discovering Memphis initiative to provide students with free field trips to local landmarks and places where they can explore and grow outside school walls.

The $3 million investment will fund field trips to landmarks across the city, including a visit to the National Civil Rights Museum (NCRM) for every eighth and eleventh-grader, where they will learn about the nation's shared history.

“The National Civil Rights Museum is a place where students can see themselves reflected in the stories told and artifacts displayed, and we believe that every child deserves that opportunity,” said NCRM President Dr. Russell Wigginton. “Thanks to this partnership and generous funding from Memphis-Shelby County Schools, we will be able to provide thousands of students with this transformative experience.”

Under the Discovering Memphis program, students in every grade will have a unique experience.

For example,

  • First-graders will explore the Children's Museum, sparking their curiosity and imagination.
  • Third and ninth-graders will experience the newly remodeled Tom Lee Park, connecting with nature and science.
  • Tenth-graders will enjoy a show at Hattiloo Theatre, immersing themselves in the arts.

"MSCS Board and staff recognize the importance of exposing students to new experiences, spaces, and cultures that they may not have been exposed to otherwise," said MSCS Board Member Kevin Woods.

"Engaging in experiential learning opportunities by visiting landmarks throughout our city, such as the National Civil Rights Museum, will broaden their knowledge and understanding, allowing for a deeper appreciation for the community and world we live in," Woods added.

Students learn best by doing. Exposing them to new cultures, ideas, and perspectives helps them become more well-rounded individuals and become more connected and appreciative of the city and world around them.

These explorations into the city are one of many ways MSCS is creating transformative opportunities to enhance student learning.

"MSCS is Discovering Memphis and letting imagination take flight," said MSCS Interim Superintendent Toni Williams. “These field trips are more than just outings. They enhance learning by opening doors to a world of opportunities and showing students that the entire city is their classroom.”
