Memphis, TN – The day began with the sounds of trumpets and the lingering scent of fresh rain from the night before. Excitement filled the air as students reunited for band camp at Southwind High School.
Nearly 100 students gathered in the school’s parking lot, rotating between different stations. Each station focused on sharpening essential band skills – marching techniques, foot positioning, formations, chants, and more. Additionally, these stations were student-led, showcasing their leadership skills at an early age.
Isaac (in white cap) leads his fellow bandmates during practice.Isaac, a senior at Southwind, led one of the stations. “I like growing on my trumpet and making bonds within the band,” he shared. As a leader, he patiently guided his peers through drills and offered encouragement when mistakes were made.
Another senior and section leader, Kennedy, plays the saxophone and also values the camp experience. “Becoming a better musician and creating bonds with these great people – that’s my favorite part,” she said.
Martivian (middle) practices marching techniques with other drummers. Martivian, a 10th-grade drummer, expressed his passion for music. “It’s a bright future ahead of me playing music, and I love listening to it,” he said.
The band camp was a clear showcase of student leadership in action. Only the most trusted and experienced students were chosen to lead their peers, and they rose to the occasion with pride.
