With over 200 schools, Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) is the largest public school district in Tennessee. That’s why the Memphis East High School Girls Soccer being the only MSCS team still in the state tournament is a monumental achievement.
Ahead of Thursday’s regional championship matchup, the MSCS Communications team sat down with the Lady Mustangs’ head coach and team captains to learn more about their journey and mindset heading into the big game.
Head Coach Jihad Haidar
Head Coach Jihad Haidar has dedicated 17 years to coaching soccer. Now in his second year at East, Haidar previously spent 15 years at Kingsbury High School and two years at the District. When asked why he left the District, he smiled and simply said, “I missed coaching.”
His favorite quote – “Stay humble and play hard” – has become a mantra for the team. Reflecting on their undefeated 17-0 season, Haidar shared that the biggest challenge was maintaining focus amid success. “When you’re winning, sometimes it’s easy to lose focus,” he said. “The job isn’t done until it’s done.”
He also offered advice to other players: “Do your best. Believe in yourself. When we started the season this year, no one thought we would do this, but here we are.”
Team Captains and Leadership
All three captains are seniors who play a pivotal role in keeping their teammates motivated and organized both on and off the field.
Vanessa Gomez, a center attacking midfielder, has played soccer for four years. To prepare for game day, she prioritizes her mental well-being. “I take a mental break,” she said. Being mentally prepared is just as important as a player’s physical capability. Her advice to shy players: “Know who you are and just play with passion.”
Addyson Hines, also a center attacking midfielder, has been playing soccer since she was 4 years old. Now a 16-year old senior, she describes the sport as a lifelong love. “It’s really just fun to me. It comes with a lot of lessons and challenges,” she said. When asked about her favorite player, she confidently answered, “Myself,” emphasizing the importance of self confidence. Her advice: “Don't give up. When one game doesn't go your way, keep going.”
Mae Jones, a center defensive midfielder, has played since she was 6 years old. “I really love the game. I just think it’s fun. I love my teammates and our dynamic,” she said. To prepare for a match, she focuses on rest and nutrition: “I try to go to sleep early the night before and eat well.” Her favorite soccer player is Tobin Heath, a two-time World Cup winner and two-time Olympic gold medalist in her 13-year career. Jones’ advice to younger players: “Be confident. Don’t let a bad game get you down.”
