The Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) True Blue Tour made its annual stop in Memphis this month, offering both counselors and a firsthand look at the programs, scholarships, and student experiences waiting for them after high school. The tour includes two events: a daytime counselors’ luncheon and an evening student reception, each designed to connect Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) students with meaningful postsecondary opportunities.
What once began as a small luncheon has evolved into a robust outreach effort that empowers counselors with critical updates about MTSU’s academic programs and student supports while also giving seniors an interactive space to explore majors, meet faculty and staff, and picture themselves on campus. Together, the events allow students and counselors a well-rounded opportunity to learn more about MTSU and its offerings.
At the Counselors’ Luncheon, MTSU President Sidney McPhee and university leaders shared updates about campus life, academics, and expanded student support services. High school counselors play a crucial role in helping students chart their futures, and the luncheon is designed to strengthen that work. As Dr. Constance B. Certion, Manager of School Counseling Services at MSCS, said, “High school counselors are the key connector for our students as they explore postsecondary pathways.”
For Hamilton High School graduation coach Nicxavier Burton, the luncheon offered both inspiration and practical tools. “We were able to become exposed to a lot of different programs that MTSU offers,” Burton said. “They showed us videos, testimonies, and even had alumni share their experiences. It really got us fired up to bring that information back to our students.”
One of the most meaningful moments of the True Blue Tour came at the end of the luncheon. Each counselor in attendance received a $2,500 scholarship check to award a graduating senior at their school planning to attend MTSU in the fall. More than $145,000 in scholarships were distributed districtwide, providing funding that can significantly reduce financial barriers for families.
Dr. Partricka Cole, Counselor at Mitchell High School, has seen the impact of this scholarship in action. “Last year, I had a student who was considering MTSU but didn’t have enough in scholarships and financial aid. I was able to allocate the True Blue scholarship to her, which made a difference and closed the financial gap for her,” she said.
Burton echoed that sentiment, adding that the scholarship allows him to deliver life-changing news to students who simply need a little extra support. “Being able to bring back pamphlets, program info, and even scholarship funds makes a huge difference – especially for students who may not know what’s possible,” he said.
Dr. Certion emphasized the significance of pairing counselor engagement with scholarship opportunities. “By blending the luncheon with an academic scholarship opportunity for each school represented, MTSU positions counselors to make a positive financial impact on a deserving student’s journey to make college a reality.”
The evening student reception extended that opportunity directly to seniors, giving them the chance to meet representatives from academic departments, student organizations, and campus support programs. Burton said he believes this student-facing component is essential. “I’ve been to other colleges where they only talk to the counselors. But having a dedicated event for students as well – that’s the key to reaching new students.”
For East High School senior Parker, the student reception offered a clear window into his future. He spoke with staff about his academic interests, explored how MTSU supports its students, and left with a stronger sense of campus life. “The reception was really great; I was able to talk with the college directly about how I want to pursue my academic studies as well as understand how MTSU operates,” he said.
Already thinking ahead, Parker shared that he’s looking forward to experiencing student life and fully engaging in higher education. He credits his MSCS dual enrollment courses with helping him build confidence and discipline: two traits that will anchor him as he steps into college. “My time at MSCS has been wonderful. It helped me prepare for the rigor in which further education brings and gather an understanding of the goals I wish to explore and achieve.”
Our District’s counselors, graduation coaches, and college advisors continue to guide students through major decisions, from choosing a postsecondary path to completing applications and finding the right financial support. Events like the True Blue Tour are just one way of strengthening those efforts and helping ensure every student has the information, confidence, and opportunity to take their next big step.
