The Giving Season at Memphis-Shelby County Schools

Across our District, holiday lights are shining, and a warm, festive energy fills our schools. This season often brings moments of joy, time with loved ones, and a well-earned pause from our hard work. At the same time, we know that many people in our community are facing real challenges. Some students and families do not have a reliable meal or a safe, comfortable place to rest, including the 1,400 Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) students currently experiencing homelessness.

Dr. Rosalind Stevenson, Director of Family & Community Engagement, said, “As we move into the holiday season, we want to ensure our families have what they need. Our District remainscommitted to removing barriers because when we provide essentials such as food, winter wear, and other vital resources, we not only support our families, but we also strengthen our connection with them. And when our families are stronger, our students are stronger mentally, emotionally, and socially which ultimately leads to greater student success.”

This year, MSCS is committed to helping make winter break a little brighter for every member of our community. Below is a roundup of events and resources available to support anyone who may need assistance this season.

Food Pantries & Community Resources

To help provide support during this time, we’ve compiled a list of reliable community resources available to assist with food, basic needs, and family services.

These resources are provided through our trusted community partners and are now available on the MSCS District website. The page will be updated as new information becomes available to ensure families have access to the most up-to-date support.

Special Populations at MSCS

If you or a family you know of in our District is experiencing challenges with student enrollment, attendance, and/or engagement based on not having fixed, adequate, and regular housing, please let us know. Our goal is to ensure that every student is fully supported and ready for school each day.

This information will help us determine whether your student is still eligible for services such as immediate school enrollment, transportation (if eligible), school supplies, and access to academic and community resources

Please call our Special Populations office at 901-416-8119.

Operation Warm Hearts

For years, Operation Warm Hearts has helped keep our students warm during the colder months by collecting new coats and winter essentials. This year, on the National Day of Giving, we’re expanding the tradition with Holiday Cheer, offering our students and families toys, bikes, electronics, and gift cards!

Stop by, drop off donations, enjoy light refreshments, and help us spread the word.

Tuesday, December 2, at the Teaching & Learning Academy (2485 Union Avenue, Memphis, TN, 38112) from 7 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

Monetary donations are accepted here. Thank you for helping us share warmth and cheer across our district!
