Rozelle Elementary School is celebrating a major achievement after being selected for the Battelle Education STEM Classroom Award, sponsored by TVA and TVA retiree organization Bicentennial Volunteers Inc. (BVI). The school earned the maximum award amount of $5,000 for its innovative project, “Cultivate to Code,” which expands high-quality STEM and computer science learning for Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) students.
Designed by third grade math and science teacher Shameka Glenn, “Cultivate to Code” blends agriculture and computer science through hands-on activities. Students use coding to track plant growth, analyze soil data, and model sustainable farming practices. The project strengthens critical thinking, creativity, and problem solving while supporting MSCS academic priorities and Tennessee Academic Standards.
The award reflects the collaborative work of teachers, students, and community partners. Clean Memphis played a key role by providing mentorship and environmental education resources that helped deepen student learning.

“Rozelle’s partnership with Clean Memphis aided by providing both students and teachers with additional resources in the areas of environmental education, sustainability, benefits of agriculture, and the relationship of STEM in all areas,” said Ms. Glenn. Rozelle Principal Dr. Taurus Hines emphasized the broader impact on student empowerment. “STEM and computer science at Rozelle are about empowerment. When students see themselves as innovators, they begin to understand that their ideas can shape the future. This award highlights the joy and legacy we are building through STEM education,” said Dr. Hines.
