Transformational Learning: How MSCS Tutoring Programs Are Leading Students to Success

Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) is spotlighting strong tutoring programs at Sea Isle Elementary, Ridgeway Middle, and Bolton High schools

Across the District, tutoring provides targeted, small-group and individualized academic support that helps students strengthen core skills, build confidence, and stay on track toward their learning goals. Through structured tutoring sessions, students receive focused instruction designed to close learning gaps, reinforce classroom learning, and support long-term success. At each of these schools, educators have created supportive learning environments where students remain motivated, engaged, and confident. Together, these programs demonstrate how intentional academic support can drive growth at every grade level.

Sea Isle Elementary School: Engagement and Enrichment

Sea Isle Elementary School’s tutoring program is built on strong engagement, consistent attendance, and a positive culture that supports learning. Under the leadership of Tutoring Coordinator Kristine King and Principal Dr. Renee Meeks, small-group rotations, enrichment activities, and strong relationships keep students focused and excited to learn.

Ms. King described the heart of the program. “Sea Isle’s After-School Tutoring Program provides students with high-quality, targeted support, encouragement, and the tools they need to thrive. Our tutors do not just teach; they connect, creating supportive spaces that build confidence, resilience, and a love for learning. When students feel supported, they engage, try harder, and see themselves as capable. Our caring tutors celebrate small wins, encourage effort, and create meaningful learning experiences. Students show up to grow, to learn, and to succeed, leaving our program stronger both academically and personally.”

Ridgeway Middle School: Innovation That Drives Growth

Ridgeway Middle School’s tutoring program, led by Coordinator Camelita McLeod with support from Principal Katrina RaggsWashington, stands out for its innovative structure and strong academic focus. Targeted interventions help students set clear goals and track progress, while consistent collaboration among tutors, teachers, and school leaders ensures instruction stays aligned to student needs.

Ms. McLeod shared that the heart of the program is understanding how students learn and making it joyful. “The program’s targeted interventions and strong collaboration allow teachers to practice deliberately, analyze data together, and plan standards aligned lessons that meet students’ needs. Our scholars are excited to come to tutoring, and our teachers are eager to tutor because they see continuous growth and increased access to Tier I instruction. The joy in our tutoring classrooms reminds us that closing achievement gaps is not just possible, it is powerful.”

Bolton High School: Focused Support for Graduation Success

Bolton High School provides a focused tutoring program that supports older students on their path to graduation. Coordinator Ravyn Jones and Principal Dr. Brandon Poyner lead a system that tracks academic progress, offers personalized support, and uses structured check-ins to keep students on track.

Principal Poyner shared, “Our tutoring program has strengthened student achievement at Bolton High School. Mrs. Jones has played a key role in ensuring that students receive targeted support that builds confidence and drives academic success.”

Coordinator Jones emphasized the strength of the tutoring team. “The success of our program is a direct result of thirteen dedicated tutors who engage students, focus on ACT preparation, and ensure every learner receives meaningful support. Bolton High is proud to have phenomenal tutors and motivated students who are ready for the next level of success.”
