MSCS Momentum in Action: Leading Through Acceleration for All

At Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS), we are proud to highlight our district’s strong engagement in the Acceleration for All (A4A) professional learning modules provided through the Tennessee Department of Education. These modules are part of a statewide initiative designed to support educators and leaders in strengthening instructional practices that accelerate student learning and ensure every child has access to rigorous, grade-level content.

The Acceleration for All initiative aims to achieve the level of literacy proficiency all Tennessee students deserve by ensuring that every student makes annual gains. It reflects Tennessee’s commitment to supporting district leaders, school leaders, and educators in ensuring that every student grows in reading proficiency each year.

MSCS proudly stands among districts with notable engagement in the initiative, and that recognition is especially meaningful because district leaders began engaging in the modules before participation became a formal expectation. Dr. Amy Maples, Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction, explained that the modules were initially shared as an available professional learning opportunity for leaders across the district. “We made these modules available as a relevant professional learning option, and our school leaders chose to engage based on what best met their needs,” she said.

That voluntary participation reflects a strong culture of ownership and commitment to instructional excellence. As Maples noted, “Our school leaders were identifying and engaging in these professional learning opportunities for themselves to improve the coherence of instruction within their buildings. Nobody had to tell them to do anything.”

The A4A School Leader Modules focus on sustaining high-quality cycles of continuous improvement through an “assess, analyze, and act” framework, strengthening monitoring systems, and enhancing collaborative planning structures. By engaging with these tools, MSCS school leaders are strengthening their capacity to drive quality instruction and continuous improvement across campuses, ensuring sustainable and high-impact learning for educators and students alike.

Now, as part of a state literacy grant supporting grades 5 through 12, engagement in Acceleration for All is a formal component of the work. However, MSCS leaders were already leaning into these learning opportunities. “Engagement in Acceleration for All is now required through our state literacy grant for grades 5 through 12, but it is notable that our leaders had already begun this work before that expectation was in place,” said Maples.

Participation in the A4A modules reflects MSCS’ commitment to professional learning that directly supports instructional excellence. School leader engagement plays a critical role in scaling effective practices, fostering collaboration, and creating conditions in which all students can thrive. Through intentional engagement with these modules, our leaders are helping build stronger teachers, stronger classrooms, and stronger outcomes for students.

We celebrate the dedication and leadership shown by MSCS school leaders who continue to prioritize professional learning as a cornerstone of instructional excellence and who advance our mission to serve every student with equity and excellence.
