Kingsbury High School senior and valedictorian Juan C. is probably one of the few students in Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) who has chosen to dedicate his life to God, the Catholic Church, and his community. His strong sense of vocation, combined with determination and humility, makes him an inspiring role model for other young people who may be considering a religious calling.
Born and raised in Memphis to Mexican parents, Juan enrolled in multiple Advanced Placement (AP) and dual-enrollment courses. He has also earned the Seal of Biliteracy and plans to enter a priesthood formation program through the Catholic Diocese of Memphis.
At first, Juan wanted to pursue a career in meteorology or diesel automotive mechanics. However, at the beginning of this year, he realized that he was destined to be an ordained clergy. “If God wants me to do that, then I will say yes, and I won’t turn Him down,” Juan said.
His plans are to attend Conception Seminary College, a Roman Catholic minor seminary in Conception, Missouri, where he will study for up to four years. Afterward, his next steps will depend on where the diocese sends him.
In the meantime, Juan encourages young people not to be afraid to ask questions and seek guidance from those with more experience. He believes that learning, growing, and believing in yourself are essential to success.
“If you want it, you can do it, and you will achieve it,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.”
For those considering religious life as a nun or priest, Juan recommends speaking with a priest for guidance on entering the seminary and living a life of service through the Church. “Parents may not always understand our religious vocation,” he said. “That’s why it’s helpful to speak with your church’s priest so he can guide you in the right direction.”
While Juan is grateful for the support of his parents and siblings, he also credits Father Simón of Sacred Heart Church as an important mentor throughout his journey. In addition, his Spanish teacher, Paola Santamaría, made a lasting impact by consistently encouraging and supporting him and his classmates.
MSCS congratulates Juan on his remarkable accomplishments and wishes him continued success as he begins this meaningful new chapter in his life.
