At Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS), educators do more than teach lessons. They inspire confidence, create opportunities, build relationships, and help shape the future of students and communities across Memphis. During Teacher Appreciation Week 2026, several MSCS educators were recognized by Memphis City Councilwoman Michalyn Easter-Thomas for the lasting impact they continue to make in the lives of students every day.
The recognition celebrated educators from schools across the District who exemplify excellence, leadership, and a deep commitment to student success. Honorees included:
Erica Bryant, Wells Station Elementary School
Jeanine Brooks Jones, East High School
Jonathan Dancy, East High School
Michael Hoots, East Career Technology Center
Matthew Jones, Overton High School
Sandra C. Polk, Colonial Middle School
Vincent J. Smith, Whitehaven High School
Cassandra Stewart, Overton High School
Jevita Taylor-Wade, Alcy Elementary School
Councilwoman Easter-Thomas said the recognition was intentionally created to celebrate educators who are making a meaningful difference in the lives of Memphis children every day.
“The education of our future Memphis generation is important, and we intentionally wanted to honor teachers who were making a difference in the lives of Memphis children,” said Councilwoman Easter-Thomas.
Among those recognized was Overton High School Teacher of the Year Cassandra Stewart, who continues to be celebrated for her outstanding impact on students and the school community. Ms. Stewart was also honored during the MSCS Teacher of the Year Celebration held on Monday, May 4, 2026, at the Memphis Botanic Garden.
A native Memphian with more than 30 years in education, Ms. Stewart serves as an English Language Arts and Advanced Placement educator at Overton High. Throughout her career, she has supported school communities as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, mentor, department chair, and instructional leader. Known for her unwavering belief in “success for all students,” Ms. Stewart has consistently inspired students to overcome challenges and reach their highest potential.
“As a 30-year educator from legacy MCS, it warmed my heart to receive such a distinguished recognition from Councilwoman Michalyn Easter-Thomas,” said Ms. Stewart. “Moreover, to receive this recognition following the beautiful reception sponsored by MSCS on May 4th at the Botanic Gardens for all 144 Teachers of the Year for the district reminds me that our district and city leaders truly love us, as Superintendent Richmond affirmed in his closing remarks at the reception. Superintendent Richmond said with such emphasis, ‘I love you all,’ and I felt this sentiment echoed as he walked around to greet each table of honorees.”
Teacher Appreciation Week serves as a reminder of the important role educators play in creating supportive learning environments where students are encouraged to grow, lead, and succeed. Across every school and classroom, MSCS teachers continue to help students discover their potential while preparing them for future success.
MSCS congratulates these outstanding educators on this well-deserved recognition and thanks all teachers across the district for their continued dedication, service, and commitment to student achievement.
