Dear MSCS Families,
I want to begin this month’s message with gratitude.
Thank you for your continued trust, your partnership, and the opportunity to serve as Superintendent of Memphis-Shelby County Schools. It is truly a privilege to serve this community, and I do not take that responsibility lightly.
I also want to be clear about something that I shared recently. My commitment to this work has never been tied to a title. Whether serving in an interim capacity or as Superintendent, I would have continued to do the work that our students and families deserve. To do this work well, you must love the people you serve. I love this community. I love our educators and staff. And most importantly, I love our children.
I show up each day grounded in purpose, with a belief that we are called to serve in ways that make a lasting difference. I promise to continue showing up, doing the work, and supporting our students, families, and schools with focus and care. As always, I encourage you to stay connected and informed by visiting my Superintendent landing page, where I continue to share updates, reflections, and key information for our district.
As we move forward, I want to take a moment to address the recent State Accountability Hearing. This is a new process introduced by the state, and while it brings a different level of review, it does not change the work already underway in our district.
During the hearing, we were able to clearly identify the root causes impacting our schools. The state acknowledged this clarity and our ability to name the challenges directly. More importantly, we presented our plans to address them, including our Academic Plan and Facilities Plan, both designed to align resources, strengthen instruction, and improve outcomes for our students. We look forward to continuing this work in partnership with the state.
This moment also calls for something deeper from all of us.
I ask our community, and especially our families, to believe in our children and our schools. While we acknowledge there is work to be done, we must be careful not to define our students or our schools by labels or perceptions. Our children are not failures. Our schools are not failures. They are a reflection of all of us, and of the investment we make in them.
If we want our students to succeed, we must believe in them, invest in them, and speak life into them every day. That belief matters. That support matters. And together, we can create the conditions for their success.
In that same spirit of transparency and accountability, I want to briefly address the recent preliminary forensic audit findings released by the state. This audit reflects prior years and predates this administration, but we welcome the opportunity to review its findings and strengthen our systems.
We take full responsibility for addressing any challenges identified. Over the past year, we have already made improvements to our processes and continue to build stronger systems that support both operational effectiveness and academic achievement. We have also launched a dedicated webpage to keep our community informed and to provide regular updates on our progress.
This work is about more than addressing findings. It is about reinforcing trust, strengthening accountability, and ensuring we are doing everything possible to support our students.
Finally, as we enter the TCAP testing window, I want to encourage all of our students and families. Our students have put in the work. Our teachers have prepared them. Our families have supported them.
Now, it is time to Lock In and Level Up.
We are confident in our students, and we are proud of the effort they have shown. I encourage you to continue supporting and encouraging them as they show what they know.
Thank you again for your trust, your partnership, and your continued belief in Memphis-Shelby County Schools.
In Partnership,
Roderick F. Richmond, Ed.D.
Superintendent
