Advanced Academics

Memphis-Shelby County Schools offers a wide variety of advanced academics courses starting as early as the middle school years for our students. We

MSCS Advanced Academics Students

 currently offer two pre-EPSO programs, Honors and Pre-AP, which serve as a stepping stone for our students to gain a stronger foundation and to be more prepared for future EPSO opportunities.

What is an EPSO?

An Early Postsecondary Opportunity (EPSO) is a high school course or program that allows a student to gain college credit or industry certification. In order for an EPSO to count, a student must take the applicable exam. The types of EPSOs include:

  • Advanced Placement (AP)
  • Dual Enrollment (DE)
  • International Baccalaureate (IB)
  • Statewide Dual Credit (SDC)
  • Career and Technical Training

  • Reduces the financial burden for families and students
  • Enables students to earn college and high school credits
  • Provides access to college resources, facilities, libraries and tutoring labs
  • Provides a seamless transition from high school to college
  • Provides wider range of course options for high school students
  • Shortens the time required for high school students to complete an undergraduate degree
