Memphis City Schools

Greetings from Principal Pete Johnson

Dear Parents,
Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year. The administration, faculty and staff at Grahamwood Elementary are very excited about the start of the new school year. Our highly qualified teachers, look forward to a year that is filled with challenges, excitement, and tangible rewards for all of the children we serve. As professional educators, we promise to do the right thing for all of our students in providing a positive, kind, motivating, and structurally sound, safe, and nuturing environment for your child to learn, grow and thrive in.

Our instructional day begins at 8:15 a.m. At 7:50 a.m., parents who are interested in having their children eat a school provided nutritious, free of charge breakfast in the cafeteria can escort their children to the east entrances of our school. For safety reasons, please do not bring your child to school before 8:00 a.m. if they are not eating breakfast. The first bell rings at 8:00 a.m. and at this time, all children are premited in the building and those in the cafeteria are dismissed to go to class. For safety issues, the children eating breakfast must not be on campus earlier than 7:50 a.m. and those not eating breakfast no earlier than 8:00 a.m. Before-care students can enter the cafeteria at 7:00 a.m. At 8:00 a.m., all students will be permitted into the building to head to their classroom.

Dismissal is staggered over a 10 minute period to permit an orderly exit of walkers, car riders, daycare buses, and aftercare with all students being on their designed way by 3:15 p.m. We have approximately 800 students who arrive and leave school in a car. Unfortunately, the school was not designed to that accommodate the amount of traffic that we have. So, please be patient and the traffic will clear out. Please do not be on your cell phone while driving through the pickup and drop off zones as this poses a safety hazard. Faculty and staff will facilitate the drop-off and pick-up process, so please patiently and courteously follow their instructions for the safety of our most valuable assets--our students.
At Grahamwood Elementary, teachers, students, parents, administrators, cafeteria personnel, and the custodian staff have one common goal. The goal is to make sure that every child attending Grahamwood Elementary School grows academically and socially this year. As principal, I am honored that you have entrusted your child's education to our remarkable faculty. Year after year, Grahamwood's history of academic excellence shines through with our students leaving our school with the best elementary education bar none. Our students go on to excel at premier middle schools, high schools, and earn incredible scholarships at our nation's most prestige universities. This is possible thanks to the wonderful partnerships we encourage between our parents, teachers, students and the larger community. I look forward to working with you and your child to make this year at Grahamwood Elementary School a special experience for both your child and your family.

Salutations from Assistant Principal Tia James

As Assistant Principal beginning my third full year at Grahamwood Elementary, I am extremely pleased to be a part of our remarkable school family and community. I am excited about working with a collaborative staff that is dedicated and committed to ensuring that our students become highly successful achievers and responsible citizens. As one of the instructional leaders of our school, I will work diligently with the faculty, staff, parents, students, and stakeholders to establish a kind, safe and effective learning environment with high expectations for both teaching and learning.

For the past 16 years, I have worked as a teacher, Assistant Principal (Jackson-Madison County Schools), and most recently a PLC Coach at Dexter Elementary. With each year of experience come new opportunities that have lead to my growth as a professional educator. My goal is to serve Grahamwood Elementary with integrity. I will work tirelessly to ensure that our students exhibit good character and achieve academic excellence. I look forward to a wonderful 2018-2019 school year that will be productive, student-centered, and where dreams will be fulfilled.
