SHELBY COUNTY SCHOOLS

INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS

The focus of Shelby County Schools is on the learner, the student. His or her educational development toward the school's goals is the central concern of the Board's policies and the administrative regulations. The teacher is a key figure in carrying out the school's responsibility in the educational process. However, the teacher alone cannot effectively achieve all the objectives of education. The purpose of the various administrative departments is to provide a school climate which permits teachers to work with maximum effectiveness and to provide them with a variety of tools and specialized assistance in developing and implementing an instructional program which will meet the needs of students in the world in which we live. The Board will seek to provide the facilities, personnel, equipment, and materials necessary for the education of all students for whom it is responsible.

The goals of education shall be as follows:

  1. To create an atmosphere in which students may discover themselves as persons of dignity and be able to maintain positive self-images.

  2. To evaluate, determine, and provide for the needs that affect the education of every student.

  3. To provide a safe environment which protects and encourages the student to use principles of safety and good health.

  4. To utilize teaching techniques which allow the students to experience success.

  5. To provide various opportunities that motivate the students to develop their intellectual potential.

  6. To provide opportunities which develop well-adjusted individuals with the highest principles of good character.

  7. To help develop an understanding of the function, needs, and care of the human body and provide activities to develop physical potential.

  8. To encourage an appreciation of cultural and aesthetic values.

  9. To provide opportunities for parents, students, and the professional staff to work cooperatively for better communication between school and community.

  10. To provide a total school program flexible enough to meet individual needs yet stable enough to provide a sense of security.

  11. To develop a proficiency in the basic reading, writing, listening, speaking and computational skills, and the ability to apply them effectively in communication and problem-solving.

  12. To encourage continual growth that produces informed, responsible citizens who contribute to the society in which they live and who learn to profit from all their experiences within the environment.
