Houston High School is located in Germantown, TN . The 45-acre campus adjoins a 25-acre city park and houses approximately 2300 students in grades 9-12.

School

Houston is a comprehensive high school, fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and hold membership in the following: NASSP, TSSAA, NACAC, and SACAC. The student body represents diverse ethnic, racial, religious, and socioeconomic groups. The administration and staff consist of 133 certified personnel, and over 75 percent have advanced degrees (masters or higher).

Calendar

The school year is 180 days divided into 4 nine-week grading periods. The school day consists of six 55-minute classes.

Curriculum

Comprehensive programs are offered in fine arts, business education, English, foreign language, home economics, mathematics, music wellness, science, social studies, special education, marketing and technology education.

Honors classes include English, biology, chemistry, world history, world geography, foreign languages, geometry, and Algebra II.

Seventeen Advanced Placement courses are offered.

Graduation Requirements

Grades

Standard courses :
A=93-100
B= 85-92
C= 75-84
D= 70-74
F-below 70

Honors Courses : 3 points are added to all scores of 70 or above.

Advanced Placement : 5 points are added to all scores of 70 or above.

GPA

Students grade point averages are calculated on a 4.0 scale and are weighed if honors and Advanced Placement courses have been taken. Notation appears if the course title on the student transcript. The GPA includes all grades earned from schools.

Class Rank

Class rank includes all members of the class and is determined by averaging all grades, including those earned at other schools.

Stats

The average ACT score in 2005 was 23.3. SAT average was 1184.

Honors and Awards

For two consecutive years, 1995 and 1996, Houston High's Knowledge Bowl team won the championship which awarded $7,500 in scholarships to each team member.

Also in 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 Houston won The Commercial Appeals Best of the Preps award, a prestigious award for accumulating the best overall athletic record in all areas.

Student Activities

Houston High School offers a variety of co curricular and extracurricular opportunities to enhance the development of individual talents and interests. Student Government , which sponsors Homecoming and Winter fest activities, provides an opportunity to e involved in representative government.

Houston has a nationally recognized vocal music program offers menís, womenís, and mixed chorus groups as well as concert and show choirs. Houston has a 220-member marching band , jazz band, and several instrumental ensembles.

In theater arts , two major productions take place each year, and televised announcements are produced each school morning.

In addition to our strong academic programs, Houston is proud of the accomplishments of its many athletic teams. For the past three years, Houston has been proud to win 2 state championships in boyís soccer, and the girlís team won the championship in the fall of 1996. Our baseball team was state champions in 1996 and 2005. Boys Cross Country were state champions in 2003 and 2004. Our Girls Cross Country were state champions in 2000, 2001 and 2002. The Boys Track team were state champions -team relay- in 1996 and 2005.

Four of the six cheer and pom squads participate in local and national competitions and are consistently ranked among the top squads in the United States . In the 1999 national competition the varsity placed fourth and the junior varsity 1st. The freshman squad placed first in the pom division and second in the jazz division.   The large number of athletic teams affords many opportunities for participation by the students.

Colleges

Approximately 84 percent of Houstons students attend a four year college, and 11 percent attend a two-year college or technical school,and 5% join the military, work force or other. During the past five years, Houston graduates have attended the following schools:
