STUDENT BEHAVIOR and RESULTING DISCIPLINE ACTION

  1.  Petting and kissing at school are inappropriate public behaviors and detrimental to an atmosphere conducive to learning. This type of behavior will not be permitted. Parents will be contacted should this conduct persist.

  2. Students selling, consuming, or possessing food, candy or drinks, outside the cafeteria will have such items confiscated and may be issued in-school suspension or out of school suspension.

  3. The use of profanity on the school bus or campus will not be tolerated. Students using profanity will be assigned ISS or OSS. In matters of opinion regarding language, the judgment of teachers and / or administrators will prevail.

  4. Students who engage in fights at school will be subject to out-of-school suspension, juvenile court summons and anger management classes upon readmission. Parents will be notified and required to check the student out for the remainder of the day. Students found guilty of an unprovoked assault or attack on another student will be arrested, transported to jail, and issued a long-term suspension. Any student who intimidates or threatens violence against another individual will be subject to disciplinary action up to and including arrest.

Penalties for FIGHTING include but are not limited to:
1st offense: 3 to 10 days OSS / juvenile summons for disorderly conduct / possible transport to juvenile authority.
2nd offense: 5 to 10 days OSS / juvenile summons for disorderly conduct / possible transport to juvenile authority
3rd offense: Long term suspension / recommendation to Alternative School / summons and transport to juvenile authority.

Fighting violations are cumulative while enrolled at MCHS.

  5. There will be zero tolerance for weapons, illegal drugs, and assault and battery. All laws, which prohibit gambling, fighting, and possession of weapons, will be in effect at school. In accordance with the guidelines established by Shelby County Schools, offenses such as possession/use of drugs, alcohol, tobacco products, assault on any school personnel, or any gang activity or violence will result in long term out-of-school suspension.

  6. During the school day, students may not have on campus any mobile communication devices (beepers, cell phones, walkie-talkies). Such devices that are heard, seen, or found will be:

    First offense:
confiscated for parent pickup and student will be assigned 2 days ISS
Second offense: confiscation and will result in one day of OSS
Third offense: confiscation and will result in 3 days of OSS.

**Penalty for not turning over device will be OSS.

  7.  Theft, vandalism, harassment of another student, verbal intimidation or immoral conduct, will result in disciplinary action. Hazing or checking of students is not acceptable behavior and is forbidden. Immediately report any such actions of this type to the school administration. Shelby County Harassment policy/procedures will be followed.

  8. Willful, persistent violation of school rules (>12 referrals) or conduct interfering with the educational process may result in a student being suspended long term and referral to the alternative school.

  9. Any student sent to the discipline office for inappropriate behavior and does not report and sign in promptly will receive OSS.

  10. All students have ample time for class change. Loitering and gathering in hallways or doorways is a hindrance to traffic flows and is not tolerated. Students are asked to keep moving to next class. Habitual disregard of this regulation will be handled in the following manner:
    1st offense = a warning,
2nd offense = one day of ISS
    3rd offense = 2 days ISS,
4th offense = one day OSS

  11.  Horseplay, running, pushing, tripping, and loud boisterous activity etc…are violations of school safety code and will not be tolerated. All such infractions will result in disciplinary action.

  12.  Violation of ISS rules and regulations will result in OSS. Unexcused absence or skipping ISS will result in OSS.

  13.  Sleeping in ISS, or in study hall, or any class is not permitted. If a student does not cooperate, a parent will be called to pick up the student. ISS may be assigned.

  14. Students are expected to cooperate fully with any personnel assigned to our school. The staff includes: principals, teachers, teacher assistants, substitute teachers, student teachers, custodians, cafeteria workers, secretaries, bus drivers, and other school support personnel. If a student disagrees with a staff member or feels they are wrong, do not argue with the adult in charge, but discuss the issue with an administrator. Problems may be easily averted this way and consequences for arguing or insubordination could be avoided.

  15. Organizations, which operate outside the jurisdiction of the Shelby County Schools, will not be allowed to function on school property or at school sponsored events. Gang activity (wearing colors, bandanas, flashing hand signs, gang writing, etc.), sororities, fraternities, and other organizations are not allowed in the Shelby County School system (SCS Policy 6505). Students who are involved in these activities at school could receive OSS / possible expulsion.
