Photosynthesis
An Internet WebQuest

Introduction | The Task | The Process & Resources | Conclusion | Evaluation

Introduction

Like rechargeable batteries, all living organisms eventually run low on energy and need to be supplied with more. We as humans obtain our energy from food. The energy in our food was first captured from the Sun and stored in substances called sugars in plants. This process is called photosynthesis.

The Task

Process and Resources

Part of your job in this WebQuest will be to take on a role in this quest. You will be working together with a group of students in class. Each group will answer the topics posed in the task. As a member of the group you will explore Web pages that explain the various topics about photosynthesis. The sites will provide information that will help you create your slide show.

You will begin with each member of your group getting some background information on photosynthesis. You will become knowledgeable on the aspects that pertain to your role in the slide show. You will present you slide show to the rest of the class using a 5 minute time limit.

Background: Everyone!

  1. Download the Logal express link and complete the activities to gain the background knowledge to help you with your WebQuest. Use greater understanding of Looking Deeper- The WebQuest groups will take on one of the following roles: Director/Editor, Cameraman, Scriptwriter, and Technological Advisor.

Carefully read each and all of the links associated with photosynthesis and gather pertinent information that you will need in your slide presentation. If you look at it in the files on the computer, copy sections you feel are important by highlighting the passage and copying / pasting it .

Be prepared to remember what you've learned and make an outline on photosynthesis using this information.

Use the Internet information linked below to answer these questions:

    1. List the three main events that make up photosynthesis.(stages)
    2. Why are pigments necessary for photosynthesis?
    3. What is a photosystem? Explain both.
    4. What is the role of water in photosynthesis?
    5. How does the Calvin Cycle depend on the light reactions?
    6. What combination of environmental factors would produce an optimum rate of photosynthesis for most plants?

===============================================================

Scriptwriter
Your role is to examine the material and record what will be the written text of the slide show.
Technological Advisor
Your role is to check the written text for accuracy of information. Lead a discussion and develop a consensus of the important information.
Editor
Decide the arrangement of the material that is to be placed in the slide show.
Cameraman
Your role will be to examine the format, images, etc. used by the group to complete the slide show. (group submits ideas, but he/she has the final approval.)

Resources

Resources for this project idea might include....

Introduction to photosynthesis
Respiration and Photosynthesis Comparison
Photosynthesis Web Sites
Evolution of photosynthesis
Photosynthesis Problems
Photosynthesis Project
What is Photosynthesis
Logal net
Chemical photosynthesis

Conclusion

Each member of the group has completed his/her outline and gained expertise on the topic of photosynthesis. Now you will apply your expertise to write a written paper and complete a presentation that will explain the topic of photosynthesis to the class. Using information, pictures, facts, lab activities, etc. from the web pages you've explored, you will use your multimedia presentation to teach the class.

Evaluation

You will receive two grades on your WebQuest project. One grade will be on your written report. The grades will be calculated by using the grading rubric.

Individual Grade: Each student will be evaluated by the teacher. Using the following guidelines make sure your paper includes:
  • Knowledge of the subject
  • Complete sentences, spelling
  • Includes all the answers to the questions in the required research
  • Quality of work/Neatness/Effort

Group Grade on presentation: Each group will be evaluated by the teacher. Using the following guidelines , make sure your slide show includes:

  • Creativity in presenting the subject
  • Level of understanding the research material.
  • Includes material from sources, animations, several charts or graphs, etc.
  • Affective use of the slide show.
