KINDERGARTEN - 2021 EARLY ENTRANCE SCREENING

Who may be screened?

Each year, the Assessment Department screens 4-year-olds who will be turning 5 from August 16 - September 30, 2021 for early entrance into Kindergarten. These children must be screened to determine if they will be eligible to enter into Kindergarten early.

Who should NOT be screened?

  • If a child will already be 5 years-old on or before August 15, 2021, then the child will not need to be screened. These children may register for Kindergarten.
  • If a child turns 5 years-old after September 30, the child cannot be screened and must wait until the following year, fall of 2022, to enroll in kindergarten.

If I am interested in getting my child screened, then what should I do?

  • Screenings are done by appointment only.
  • Interested parents should call the Assessment Department at (901) 416-5450 to schedule an appointment. Parents may begin calling on Wednesday, June 9, to make appointments for testing dates that will be available in late June and July. Keep in mind that we will only take appointments for 4-year-olds who will turn 5 from August 16 - September 30.
  • During the call, you will be given an appointment date, time, and location.
  • If you have questions or concerns after you have scheduled your appointment, please contact the Assessment Department at (901) 416-5450.

  • Parents may begin calling on June 9 to schedule appointments for testing dates that will be available in late June and July.

Location:

  • SCS Board of Education (160 S. Hollywood St., Memphis, TN 38112)

Where should I park?

  • Parents will park in the lot in front of the Board of Education (on Hollywood). Parents should enter the building using the Barnes entrance which is on the far right when you face the building with Hollywood street to your back.

What should I bring?

  • Bring your 4-year-old child to the screening appointment.
  • Original, certified copy of your child’s birth certificate
  • Parent's photo ID

How long will the screening take?

  • Most assessments will take 20-30 minutes to complete. However, keep in mind that assessment times may vary depending on the amount of time that each child needs.
  • Parents will check in at a check-in table and be asked to sign the necessary documentation and provide the necessary proofs (birth certificate and parent’s picture ID) before their child can be screened. After the parent checks in, the teacher administering the test will meet the child and bring him/her to the designated screening room.
