America's PRIDE
Sponsor :  L.A. Smith / Crowe/Billet
Purpose :  To provide opportunities for team members to learn more about the dangers of drug abuse and present programs which promote a drug-free lifestyle to elementary and middle school students.
Requirements :  Team members must sign a pledge to remain drug-free.  They must be willing to teach younger students through songs, dances, or skits.
Meets :  Wednesday afternoons from 2:25 - 3:30 p.m. in Cafeteria
Cost :  $8 dues plus $12 for official America 's PRIDE performance t-shirt.
Recommendations :  2 teacher recommendations and essay required.

Band

2006 Grand Champions!

Sponsor :  Smith
Purpose :  The Houston band is a performance organization for grades 9 - 12.  Performance opportunities are offered through Marching Band, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Clarinet Choir, Flute Choir, Percussion Ensemble, and Color Guard.
Requirements :  While enrollment in band class is open to anyone with prior band experience, participation in a performance group is at the discretion of the director.
Meets :  Once a day during school and after school as needed.
Cost :  A small fee is charged to those students using school owned instruments.  There is also a charge for summer band camp.

Beta Club

Purpose :  Service organization to school and community
Requirements :  90 GPA, E or S in conduct, no honor infractions, no ISS or OSS. Faculty recommendations. Open to 2nd semester Sophomores, and all Juniors, and Seniors
Meets :  Monthly in Studyhall
Cost :  $20 national dues (paid once) $20 local dues paid yearly

Bridge Builders 

Sponsor: Gilleylen
Purpose :  It is a leadership and diversity program that involves junior and senior high school students.

Concert Choir -
Sponsor :  Dr. Billy Rayburn
Purpose :  To represent the school and Shelby county as ambassadors of goodwill in T.V. presentations, civic organizations, churches, school concerts, conventions, and as demonstration groups at educational workshops.
Requirements :  Any student with a high interest in singing and performing.
Practices :  Daily throughout the school year.
Tryouts :  Members are auditioned in the spring for participation in the following school year.
Cost :  Members are asked to buy a uniform and participate in the Houston Choir Booster Club (approximate total cost $90)

Purpose :  To present to athletics and coaches and those whom they influence the challenge and adventure of receiving Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, and serving Him in their relationships and in the fellowship of the church.
Requirements :  Interest in sports and recreational activities.
Meets :  3rd Tuesday of each month in Varsity Gym

FCCLA (Families, Careers & Community Leaders of America)

Purpose :  To promote leadership; to involve in school and community; to develop skills related to successful family life.

Purpose :  The purpose of Business Professionals of America is to prepare students for the business workforce through the advancement of leadership, citizenship, academic, and technological skills.  By integrating its programs into the business classroom, Business Professionals of America build leadership, professionalism, poise, dependability, patriotism, and competency into business students.
Requirements :  Any student who is currently enrolled in a business, office, or business education course.

German Club

Purpose :  To promote knowledge of German-speaking cultures.

HOSA - Health Occupations Students of America

Purpose :  HOSA is a national youth leadership organization for students interested in career opportunities in the health care industry.  By combining classroom training with membership in HOSA, students gain important knowledge and leadership skills that will enable them to be successful now and later in life.
Requirements :  Secondary member - Any student enrolled in the Health Science & Technology Program; Associate member - any Houston High student.
Meets :  2nd &3rd Tuesday of each month in Room A202

International Club

International Thespian Society
Sponsor :  Lorraine Cotten
Purpose :  The International Thespian Society is the student counterpart to he Educational Theater Association.  The Thespian Society offers students exposure to the larger world of theater.  As members, students must participate in events such as the State Thespian Conference, the International Thespian Festival, and have opportunities to earn scholarships for college.
Requirements :  Any student with a professional interest in the performing arts.  Students earn membership through the Thespian point system.  Ten points are required for initiation.
Meets :  2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month or as designated by the sponsor.
Cost :  After membership initiation:  $22 annual dues.

Junior Classical League

Purpose :  To enhance knowledge of and appreciation for ancient civilizations and their contributions to the present.
Requirements :  Present and former students of Latin.
Meetings :  Special events to be announced (No meetings during Club Schedule)

Key Club
Sponsor : Karen Pullen
Purpose :  To develop initiative and leadership while serving the school and community through experiences in living and working together.
Requirements :  Open to any student in grades 9 -12; five hours of service per month
Meets :  After school in Circulation Library
Cost :  $15
Recommendations :  Two teacher recommendations.

Knowledge Bowl
Sponsor :  Cook & Poole
Purpose :  To compete for academic scholarships in the Channel 3 Knowledge Bowl.  To compete in academic competitions throughout the state.
Requirements :  Any student interested in any grade may participate.
Meets :  Wednesday and Thursday afternoons 2: 20 - 3:20 p.m. in Rm. 129

Literary Magazine- Avatar

Purpose : To create the school's literary magazine and participate in the Wordsmith competition
Requirements : Open to creative, artistic and dedicated students
Meets : After school in Rm. 223

Martial Arts

Meets : 3rd Tuesday in Rm.34

Mock Trial
Sponsor :  Wolff
Purpose :  To teach courtroom procedure, etiquette, and strategies, while arguing the prosecution and defense of a case.  District competitions are held in February, and State competitions are held in March.
Requirements :  One night of practice a week, student run study groups with team, the student needs to be available for state and district competitions.
Tryouts :  Will be held towards the end of October for roles of Attorney and Witness.
Practices :  Thursday night 6:30 - end.
Cost :  $10 to pay for Attorney coach's fees, props, and team expenses.

Model United Nations
Sponsor :  Wolff
Purpose :  A role playing activity in which participants assume the roles of delegates from various nations.  Its purpose is to introduce participants to the structure and purpose of the United Nations and the challenges of international relations.  This includes exposing delegates to an understanding of how diplomacy, politics and caucuses operate.
Meets :  After school

Mu Alpha Theta
Sponsor :  Packard & Hayes
Purpose :  To foster an interest in mathematics and to help other students through tutoring and/or mentoring so that they can learn to enjoy mathematics also.
Requirements :  11th and 12th graders who have completed Algebra II.  They must have at least a 96 average in each semester of their high school mathematics courses.  They are recommended by their mathematics teacher and then must be voted in by the other club members.

National Art Honor Society

Purpose :  Recognize those students who have shown outstanding ability in the field of art; serve as an inspiration for students to strive for higher goals in their work.
Requirements :  9th graders who have completed one semester of art at Houston High School and are currently enrolled in art with a consistent "A" average.  No ISS or OSS .  All conduct, all subjects "S" or "E."

National Honor Society

Purpose :  Recognition of students with highest grades, character, and leadership.
Requirements :  94 GPA cumulative - open to second semester juniors and seniors.

Cost :  $15 per year ($10 plus $5 induction fee)

The Pony Express

Purpose :  To produce the Pony Express, the student newspaper of Houston High School .
Requirements :  Students interested in becoming a member of the staff will enroll in Journalism/Newspaper.  The main areas studied are news writing, sports writing, editorial writing, photography, advertising, and graphic design.  Teacher recommendation is required.

Science Bowl Team
Sponsor :  Roberts / Poole
Purpose :  Science competition.
Requirements :  10th - 12th grade only.
Meets :  November through April.
Try-outs :  Qualification by examination;
Recommendations :  Recommendation by science teacher required.

Show Choir
Sponsor :  Dr. Rayburn
Purpose :  The HHS Show Choir is a group of 12 young men and women who perform  wide variety of pop, jazz, and Broadway music through singing and choreography.  The group performs for various church, community, school, and civic organizations.  On average, the group performs 32 times during the year.  At Christmas the group, dressed in traditional Dickens carolers attire, becomes a caroling group performing again for many organizations throughout Shelby County .
Requirements :  Demonstrate a very advance vocal skill with the ability to sing a variety of styles (pop, jazz, Broadway, etc._.  Demonstrate the ability to quickly learn and perform jazz and hip hop dance steps.  Demonstrate the maintenance of a high GPA because of the demands of the class in practice and performance at night and during the school day.  Demonstrate the ability to work well with others in a group situation in which constructive criticism is frequently given.
Try-outs :  Auditions are held in March each year for the following school year.
Cost :  $300 choreography fee and a $65 uniform fee.

Purpose :  To increase cultural awareness and world communications.
Requirements :  Any student presently taking Spanish and maintaining satisfactory conduct in all classes.

Spanish National Honor Society

Purpose :  To further the students' interest in the culture, language and diversity of the Hispanic population world-wide.
Requirements :  Students must presently be in Level III or IV classes, maintain a "B" average, have excellent conduct, and be willing to do community service activities.
Meetings :  Officers only meet the 2nd Tuesday of each month.  Students meet once or more after school or at night at local restaurants or homes.

Purpose :  The purpose of Student Impact is to provide a forum for a Christian-based ministry to the faculty, staff, and student body of Houston High School .
