Agnes Scott College

Merit Scholarships and Awards Program has awards that range in value up to full costs. You must have applied to the college and for the scholarships by either December 15 or January 15, depending upon the particular scholarship.

AmeriCorps National Service

In exchange for a year or two of service, full-time AmeriCorps members earn a living allowance, health care, and an education award of$4,725 to finance college or vocational training. There is a diverse network of programs across the country. Call 1-800-942-2677 or visit http://www.americorps.org

Amtrak Discounts

Amtrak offers 25% discount coupons for a junior or senior with one or both parents to ride the train to visit colleges. Coupons are usually available in the College Office. They must be used before June 30.

Asthma Athlete Scholarship Program

Schering/Key awards ten "Will to Win" scholarships to high school seniors. Each is a one-time grant, which is sent directly to student's college. Awards range from $1,000 to $10,000. Must demonstrate leadership qualities, extracurricular activities and have achieved excellence in competitive sports and high school academics. Deadline: postmark April 30. Ayn Rand Institute

Annual essay contests: 1) The Anthem; for 9th and 10th graders. First prize $1,000. Deadline is April 1. Detailed information about the essay is available at web site. 2) The Fountainhead; for 11th and 12th graders. First prize is $5,000. Deadline is April 15.

Best Buy Community Volunteer Awards

$500 awards will be made to students who have made extraordinary contributions to their communities. Essay required. Deadline is March 26.

Boston College

Presidential Scholars Program. Awards range from $11,000 (no need) per year to $21,700 per year (based on need). Fully funded summer internships, travel and service programs. Candidates must apply by the Early Action deadline of November 1.

Boston University

The College of Engineering sponsors an annual Scholarship Examination Competition in November in four locations; Boston, Los Angeles, Chicago and Atlanta. The top 6 scores will receive full tuition scholarships to BU. Registration is available online at www.bu.edu/eng/EVENTS and must be returned by November 1. Brandeis University

Justice Louis D. Brandeis Scholarships--$19,000/yr; Hiatt Challenger Memorial Scholarships; 75% tuition; Presidential Scholarships; at least $11,000/yr. All applicants to the university will be considered for these awards. Deadline for admission applications is January 1.

Frank H. Buck Foundation

Scholarships to be used for cost of private high school, college, graduate school or a specialized program. Students who demonstrate strength of character, enterprise, personal initiative, and all-around merit should apply. Burger King Scholars

Over 1,500 Scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded to graduating seniors. Coca Cola Scholars Program

Deadline to mail application is October 31. Applications are available in the College Office. Program awards 50 scholarships worth $20,000 and 200 scholarships worth $4,000. Minimum GPA; 3.0 unweighted. Selection will emphasize students who are well-rounded, are involved in a variety of extracurricular activities and who display strong, demonstrated leadership qualities. Colby College

The Ralphe J. Bunche Scholars Program offers scholarships to students of African, Latina/o, Asian, and Native American ethnicity. Must be nominated by HHS. See college counselor before January 15.

National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution

Several scholarships available for students studying Political Science, Government, Economics, Nursing, Medicine and some specific scholarships for students attending the University of the Ozarks, and sons and daughters of members of the NSDAR. Deadlines vary from February 1 to August 15th. See college counselor for more information.

Tennessee Society Daughters of the American Revolution

Scholarships available to citizens of Tennessee entering their freshman year of college at an accredited program at a four-year university or college. Essay entitled "My future and How I Hope to Achieve My Goal" is required with application. See college counselor.

DeVry

Academic Scholarships are available to students who have applied for admission. DeVry must receive test score documentation by March 8, 2002. For information send an email to outreach@devry.edu

Easley Scholarship

This organization is described by the Better Business Bureau as a "for profit company that sells applications for college scholarships." The same information should be available to you at no charge through various other means. If you have received information from Easley, it would be well to disregard it.

Elks National Foundation

500 Most Valuable Student scholarships, including two top prizes of $60,000, given over four years to one male and one female student. Other scholarships range from $1,000 a year to $40,000 over four years. Students are judged on scholarship, leadership, and financial need. Emory University

Emory Scholars Program; HHS may nominate 2 students. Preliminary application must be returned to the College Office by November 1. HHS scholarship committee will decide nominees. Awards range from full tuition to tuition, room, board and fees. Applicants must exhibit extraordinary personal qualities exemplified in such areas as creativity, leadership and volunteer service. A candidate must have application materials to Emory by November 15.

FAFSA

Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Filing this form is necessary if you are applying for aid to almost any college or university. Do NOT submit application until after January 1, but do so as soon after that date as you can; some funds do run out of money before their published deadlines. Apply online at www.fafsa.ed.gov Advantages to applying online are as follows: screens and checks built into web program will make errors that delay processing less likely to occur and results are quicker.

Furman University

The Herman Warden Lay Scholarship has a value of $22,736 per year; over $95,000 for four years. Criteria include being among the top students in the school in the following areas: GPA, test scores, demonstrated strong leadership and commitment to high school and community activities. Georgia Bulldog Alumni Club; Vince Dooley Scholarship

Student will attend UGA and complete an application package by April 2. Award is $3000 renewable.

Georgia Foundation Fellows

For superior students. Award includes full tuition, room board, and travel and study abroad and research grants. Recipients ultimately determined through interview process.

Georgia Tech

Students interested in the President's Scholarship must submit a completed Georgia Tech application by October 31. There is no separate application for this scholarship. Qualifications are the following: high grades, demonstrated leadership and participation in activities, a personal statement, and SAT I in 1200-1300 range. Germantown Lions Club

Students must show evidence of community service. Scholarship is $500. Applications are available in the College Office. Deadline is May 1.

Germantown Rotary Scholarship for Science and Math

Students must prepare a study proposal. Applications are available in the College Office; award is $2,500 and deadline is May 1.

Hollins University

The Nancy Thorp Memorial Poetry Contest is an opportunity for 11th and 12th graders to win cash prizes by entering poems. 1st prize is $50. Apply at www.creative.writing@hollins.edu

John Hopkins

The Hodson Trust Scholarship is the highest recognition for academic excellence, personal achievement , and leadership abilities. $20,000 renewable award is granted to approximately 15 students who are nominated by their high school counselor, teacher, or principal.

The Hodson Success Scholarship is a competitive award offered to financially needy, outstanding minority students who apply for freshman admission. Students must be nominated by their high school counselor, teacher, or principal and will receive a renewable financial aid package consisting entirely of grant funds to meet full need as determined by the federal formula.

Charles R. Westgate Scholarships in Engineering provides full tuition an a stipend for living expenses for four years of undergaduate study in engineering. Up to two scholarships are offered each year to the most outstanding engineering applicants to the freshman class.

Woodrow Wilson Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program offers new freshmen in the School of Arts & Sciences a $10,000 research grant, distributed over four years, to work with a world-renown faculty member on an independent research project of their own choice.

Ithaca College

The Park Scholar Award is a prestigious full scholarship that recognizes students who have demonstrated academic and creative achievement in communications, involvement in relevant co-curricular activities, and significant community service. It is valued ar $28,166 per year. Deadline is February 1.

James A. Hyter Vocal Music Scholarship Fund

Requirements: have a current GPA of 3.0 on 4.0 scale; be enrolled, or intend to enroll, in a two or four-year course of study at an accredited institution of higher learning; possess vocal talent accompanied by love of music; submit required attachments listed on application form. Qualified applicants will audition. Award amounts in 2000, $3000 total. Applications are available in College Office or call 728-4600.

James M. Smyth and Virginia M. Smyth Scholarship Fund

This scholarship was established to assist individuals to be educationally prepared to support themselves and contribute to society through business, science, human services, music, the ministry or in other ways that use or help one to develop his or her God-given abilities or talents. Requirements: be graduating seniors; be above average student or better; pursue an education in the arts and sciences, human services, music, ministry, and related fields and helping professions; submit application form and required attachments. Application forms are available in College Office or call 728-4600. Scholarships range from $1,500 - $3,000.

Johns Hopkins University

Beneficial-Hodson Scholarship. Requirements: SAT 1390+; GPA 3.7; must be nominated by HHS. Deadline is November 15 for Early Decision, January 1 for regular admission.

Awards: $68,000 over 4 years.

Lucent Global Science Scholars Program

International competition open to high school seniors planning career in information technologies. Based entirely on merit without regard to financial need. Fifty winners will receive $5,000 scholarships and be considered for summer internships with Lucent Technologies following freshman year. Deadline: postmark application by January 20. Marshall University

Yeager Scholars Program invites students to apply for this scholarship. Requirements are ACT 28 or SAT 1260, superior grades, extra curricular activities or community activities and leadership ability. Award is full tuition and fees, half room and board, and $4,000 toward study and travel abroad.

Marty Hart Memorial Scholarship Fund

Award is administered through the Optimist Youth Foundation, Inc. Purpose of award is to help young people, who demonstrate need, enter college. Deadline: postmark completed application by May 15. Applications are available in College Office or call 454-0090.

Mary Washington College

Alumni scholarship program offers awards from $500 to full in-state tuition. Must be accepted into the Honors Program by January 15. Must exhibit academic distinction as determined by high school program, academic performance, standardized test scores and outstanding individual characteristics. Must apply for admission by the deadline of January 15.

Mercer University

Mercer University will hold its Collegiate Scholarship Competition the weekends of November 30 and December 7. Candidates must have applied for admission by November 1 and meet certain academic requirement to be invited to participate. Scholarships range from $14,500 to $25,000 annually. Check in guidance office for more information or contact Mercer Admissions at admissions@mercer.edu.

Middle Tennessee State University

One hundred Presidential Scholarships, of $4,000 per academic year, are awarded to first time freshman applicants who have an ACT score of 29 or higher (1280 or higher SAT) and at least a 3.75 GPA. Applicants must be US Citizens. Application deadline is

Students are considered for the Academic Service Scholarship based on ACT score and GPA. Minimum ACT score is 23. The award is $2,600 per academic year, and there is a five hour per week work obligation. Valedictorians and salutatorians who qualify will receive $3,000 per academic year. The Scholastic Achievement Scholarship is available to African-American U.S. citizens enrolling at MTSU as first-time freshmen. Applicants must have a minimum of 22 on their ACT and at least a 3.0 GPA. This scholarship currently offers an award of $2,600 per academic year. Deadline to apply is March 1. Mississippi State University

Freshman academic scholarships vary in amounts from full tuition with housing to over $5,000/yr. You must apply to the university to be considered. Deadline is April 1.

Scholars' Recognition Day is usually held in September. Students are invited to visit each college and school and be guests at a luncheon in their honor. If you are interested in Mississippi State, have a 28 ACT or 1230 SAT, see the college counselor in order to be nominated.

Murray State University

Several scholarships are available to incoming freshmen. Applications must be postmarked by February 1. Application is available in the College Office, or at www.murraystate.edu/scholarships.

National Honor Society

NHS and National Association of Secondary Principals award 200 scholarships of $1,000 each. Society chapters nominate two senior members who have shown outstanding character, earned good grades, performed community service and demonstrated strong leadership skills. National Security Agency Undergraduate Training Program

Requirements: SAT 1100 or ACT 25; GPA 3.0; U.S. citizen; plans to major in computer science, electrical or computer engineering, foreign languages or mathematics. Demonstration of leadership abilities and involvement in extracurricular activities is important. Recipients will work at NSA during summers, and after graduation, usually 5 or 6 years. Oglethorpe University

James Edward Oglethorpe Scholarship Competition is usually held in January. It consists of 2 faculty-led seminars and a writing component. Scholarships will be awarded. Criteria are: 1300 SAT or 30 ACT; 3.6 GPA; superior record of leadership in school and community activities. Deadline is December 4. Must be nominated by HHS.

P.L.A.T.O.

This is basically a student loan company that is offering scholarships. Apply on-line for this scholarship at www.plato.org. Any college-bound senior with a 2.75 or higher GPA can apply. Deadline is April 30.

Phi Delta Kappa Scholarships for Prospective Educators

Criteria includes: letters of recommendation, written expression, interest in a teaching or professional education career, school and community activities, rank in upper 1/3 of class. Deadline is March 15.

Phi Delta Kappa for Future Teachers

Presbyterian College

Several academic scholarships are available based on academic achievement. Criteria vary for various scholarships. Contact the Office of Admissions at 1-800-960-7583. Students must submit their completed application for admission to Presbyterian College by Dec. 5 to be considered for an academic scholarship.

Prudential Spirit of Community Awards

This award is designed for students to be recognized for volunteer community service. Award is for $1,000 at state level and $5,000 for national. Applications are in the College Office. HHS may select only one student. The deadline is October 30. Contact the College Counselor if you think you qualify.

Randolph Macon College

Many merit scholarships as well as minority scholarships are available. Must apply for admission before being considered for an award. Deadline is February 1. Contact Randolph-Macon, Office of Admissions, P.O. Box 5005, Ashland, VA 23005-5505. Call 800-888-1762. The Gottwald Scholarship is a full-tuition, renewable award, which includes a $2,500 fellowship for travel or study abroad. Deadline is December 1.

Rhodes College

The J.R. Hyde and Walter Bellingrath Scholarships requirements: 1350 SAT or 30 ACT; 3.8 GPA; significant, demonstrated leadership and community involvement; nomination by HHS or alumnus/a. Deadline to College Office is November 1. Awards: full scholarships valued at $100, 000 for 4 years.

Rice University

The Barbara Jordan Scholarship is valued at up to $30,000 over 4 years and seeks candidates from all racial/ethnic backgrounds who exemplify Ms Jordan's characteristics through their academic achievements, community outreach, writing, special events/programs, organizational leadership, performances, or other creative expression. You must apply to Rice, and you will automatically be considered based on the experiences and activities that have shaped your knowledge of and exemplified your commitment to the educational value of living in a culturally diverse environment.

Robert R. Church Scholarship Fund

This fund memorializes Mr. Robert Reed Church, the first African-American millionaire in Memphis. Requirements: be a high school junior or senior in Memphis or Shelby County Schools who has successfully completed Applied Economics with a "C" average by the end of first semester senior year.; aspire to a degree in business at a junior college, college or university in Tennessee; provide a letter of recommendation from the applicant's Applied Economics instructor. Ron Brown Scholar

This is a national program designed to award scholarships to academically talented, highly motivated, African-American high school seniors. Applicants must have excelled academically, exemplified exceptional leadership potential, made an impact on their communities through service to others, and must demonstrate financial need. The award is $10,000 per year for 4 years. Deadline is January 9. Applications are in the College Office or on-line at www.ronbrown.org

Rufus Thomas Scholarship Fund

Provides assistance to musically talented, at-risk youth. Requirements: be graduating senior from Memphis City or Shelby County public school; exhibit musical talent and strong desire to pursue career in music or a related field in an accredited post-high school academic setting; demonstrate academic need; submit required attachments listed on application form. Applications are available in College Office or call 728-4600.

SAE Engineering Scholarship Program

Several scholarships available to students who intend to earn a degree in engineering or a related science (math, chemistry, physics, biology, technologies, computer science). Corporate-sponsored scholarships will be based on criteria established by the sponsor. Applications due by December 1. Application available in the College Office.

Scholarship Scams

The Federal Trade Commission cautions students to look for these tell-tale lines from companies promising scholarships:

"The scholarship is guaranteed or your money back."

"You can't get this information anywhere else."

"I just need your credit card or bank account number to hold this scholarship."

"We'll do all the work."

"The scholarship will cost some money."

"You've been selected by a 'national foundation' to receive a scholarship."

Nobody can guarantee that you'll win a scholarship. Check with the College Counselor or at http://www.finaid.org for more information

Selective Service

All men are required to register with the Selective Service as soon as they reach 18, even though there is no draft. Registration forms are available at www.sss.gov or at the post office.

ServiceMaster Scholarship

Award is $1,000. Requirements: 2.5 GPA, demonstrated community service or club involvement, 2 recommendations, 250-word essay addressing why you want to go to college and what you would like to become. Deadline is April 15.

Southern Methodist University

The Hunt Leadership Scholars Program is for students who have demonstrated active and effective leadership during high school, and commitment and concern in service to others. Award is for almost all tuition. Students must rank in top 25% and have SAT 1200 or ACT 28. SMU application for admission with an additional essay is required for consideration. Deadline is January 15.

Spring Hill College

Full tuition scholarships are awarded to freshmen who are academically superior with proven leadership qualities and outstanding character. Requirements: 3.4 GPA a 27 ACT or 1200 SAT. Must be admitted to Spring Hill by January 15. Call 1-800-742-6704 or www.shc.edu

AHANA Leaders Scholarship

$4,000 scholarships awarded to African-American, Hispanic, Asian or Native American students who have exemplified superior leadership qualities and outstanding character. Must be admitted to Spring Hill by January 15. See contact information above.

Swarthmore College

The Lang Scholars is a program that provides applicants to Swarthmore who have demonstrated a commitment to effective social change through their activities in high school. Lang Scholars have the chance to apply for generous financial resources during their college years and to support initiatives they decide to take in the areas of community service and social change. An essay is required and is due January 1.

Tennessee Burglar & Fire Alarm Association

Scholarships available to students whose parent or legal guardian is a full-time active duty employee of a police or sheriff's department or a full-time paid or volunteer member of a fire department in Tennessee. Applications due by March 1, 2002. Call 1-800-829-6465 for application.

Tennessee Honors Program

Qualified seniors should complete an application, develop an independent research project and submit them with supporting evidence of accomplishments. Must be nominated by Houston High School. Deadline: November 13.

Tennessee PTA

One-time, not renewable scholarships granted to deserving students preparing to teach or work in a child-related career in Tennessee. Applications are available in College Office. Awards are usually $1,000. Deadline: postmark March 1.

Tennessee Tech University

Scholarship procedure has changed. After applying for admission to Tennessee Tech, students must complete the on-line scholarship form, available at www2.tntech.edu/scholarships by December 15.

Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund

Most recipients come from families with annual incomes of less that $20,000 and are usually the first in their family to attend college. Requirements: GPA 3.0, ACT 25, SAT 1100. Award is renewable for 4 years. Information available in College Office or call 877-690-8673 or www.thurgoodmarshallfund.org

Toyota Community Scholars Award

Applicants must demonstrate community involvement by being actively involved in a service organization or project that has a positive impact on the school and/or community. Must have at least a 3.0 GPA. Awards range from $10,000 to $20,000 over 4 years. HHS can nominate one student. See the College Counselor before November 15.

University of Alabama

The National Alumni Association of the University of Alabama is offering scholarships with a wide range of awards. Other scholarship information for U Alabama is available. Deadline is December 1.

University of Chicago

The University of Chicago's Honor Scholarship, valued at $22,902/yr is renewable for up to 4 years. Write for an application to: The University of Chicago, Office of College Admission, 1116 East 59th St., Chicago, IL 60637. Phone: 773-702-8650.

University of Florida

UF has two decision plans: Early Decision and Regular Decision. The deadlines are 1/15 and 1/28 respectively. Early decision applicants will have a written decision by 11/15, and if admitted, are obligated to attend and to withdraw all other college applications. An Early Decision Contract must accompany your application and must be signed by the College Counselor.

University of Mississippi

McDonne;;-Barksdale Honors College: Student should have ACT 31, GPA 3.85, be involved in school and community activities. Deadline: February 1.

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Chapel Hill has announced a November 15 deadline to be considered for academic scholarships and the Honors Program.

University of Pennsylvania

Penn School of Nursing is offering 2 loan forgiveness programs. The loan does not have to be repaid if the student commits to working 2 years in the field after graduation. Awards are up to $30,000 over 4 years. Must apply to Penn to be considered

University of Richmond

Oldham Scholars; full scholarship for outstanding leadership at school and community activities, exceptional high school record and test scores. Deadline is January 2.

Ethyl Scholars Program; full scholarship for demonstrated clear commitment to the study of science and an intention to pursue graduate work in further preparation for careers in the sciences. Exceptional high school record is necessary. Deadline is January

University Scholars Program; 1/2 tuition award. Must apply to U Richmond for admission; no separate application is required.

University of Tennessee National Alumni Association

Alumni Andrew D. Holt Scholarship is a four year $16,000 scholarship ($4,000 per year) based on academic merit and leadership. Application deadlines vary from November 1 to February 1.

Alumni National Merit Scholarship is a four year award for National Merit Finalist sho have designated a campus of the University of Tennessee as his/her first choice.

Alumni Valedictorian Scholarship is a $3,000 two year award ($1,500 per year).

Alumni Achievement Scholarship is a two year award of $1,500 per year. Minimum academic requirement are a 3.0 GPA and 24 ACT.

University of Virginia

Jefferson Scholars Foundation offers scholarships to high school seniors who possess exceptional ability in leadership and scholarship and who show promise of making a significant contribution to the University community as students and to society at large as graduates. Last year $25,870 was awarded to non-Virginians. One nominee per high school. See the College Counselor for more information. Deadline is November 1.

Wake Forest University

Nine scholarships with varying criteria - some need based, some academic and talent based. Applications due by January 1.

Washington and Lee University

George Washington Honor Scholarships are based on ability rather than financial need. Applicants must file a special Honor Scholarship Application with their other admissions materials. Contact the College Admissions Office at 540-463-8710
