ENGLISH I (Standard) EN151
GRADE 9
English I (Standard) is designed for students who are
functioning at grade level. Emphasis is placed on mastering
basic grammar skills and using these grammar skills in
writing and speaking. Analysis of world literature,
vocabulary building, and basic research skills are integral
parts of this course.
PREREQUISITES - None Credit 1
ENGLISH I (Honors) EN181 Grade
9
English I (Honors) is recommended for students who have
maintained at least a 94 average in 8th grade language arts.
Emphasis is placed on literature, grammar, writing, and
vocabulary. Analysis and critical thinking are strongly
emphasized. Organizational skills and research techniques
(concepts encompassed by the research paper) are taught.

ENGLISH II (Standard) EN251
Grade 10
English II (Standard) is designed for tenth grade students
functioning on grade level in writing skills, basic grammar
usage, and reading. Special emphasis is placed on
development of skills in composition, usage, spelling, and
mechanics. World literature is taught.
PREREQUISITES - English I Credit 1
ENGLISH II (Honors) EN281
English II (Honors) includes world literature, grammar
(sentence structure, classes, sentence styles), and
composition (formal and informal writing). Composition is
taught in conjunction with grammar and literature.
PREREQUISITES - English I Honors with a 92 average 1st
semester of 9th grade; Credit 1

ENGLISH III (Standard) EN351
Grade 11
English III (Standard) is designed to meet the needs of
those students who show average proficiency in the writing
and grammar skills of grade level. Great emphasis is placed
upon composition, vocabulary, interpretation, and analysis
of American literature. A research paper is required in this
course.

ENGLISH III (HONORS) EN381
Grade 11
English III (Honors) is designed to meet the needs of those
students who have mastered the writing and grammar skills of
grade level. Great emphasis is placed upon composition,
vocabulary, interpretation, and analysis of American
literature. Research skills are taught.

ENGLISH IV (Standard) EN451
Grade 12
English IV (Standard) is designed for students who are
functioning on their grade level. Major emphasis is on
British literature from the early writings through modern
literature. Emphasis is on vocabulary, critical writing,
critical thinking skills and research.

APPLIED COMMUNICATION-ENGLISH IV
EN461 Grade 12
Applied Communication is a course designed to teach English
skills in an applied setting, to help students transfer
improved reading, writing, listening, speaking,
problem-solving, visual and non-verbal skills to their
occupations and personal skills.

AP ENGLISH IV EN489 Grade
12
The Advanced Placement (AP) senior English course is
designed to provide an intensive study of representative
literary works and authors along with frequent exercise in
analytical composition. Paralleling this study is a survey
in English literature and ongoing vocabulary development.
Early in the academic year, the AP student is encouraged to
ask the colleges of his choice about their AP policies since
colleges differ in their use of national tests for placement
and credit. The College Board's AP English exam is
administered in May. A final qualifying examination is
required and the fee of $75 must be paid by all students
enrolled in this course at the beginning of the year. (Upon
successful completion of the AP test, the student can earn
one or two college semester credits in English (3-9 semester
hours).)

Requirements: Memo of understanding; a desire to work;
attendance at one student-parent-teacher orientation
meeting; commitment to a summer reading
list; approved writing sample.

The basic principles of Journalism are emphasized. The main
areas studied are news writing, sports writing, editorial
writing, feature writing, photography, graphic design, and
advertising. Students who enroll in the class should have
average or above average writing skills and should be
interested in improving them. Journalism is not for English
credit. Teacher approval is required. Note: Students
enrolled in Journalism are responsible for the production of
the school newspaper or the school annual. After school
hours are required.

ETYMOLOGY EN261 Grades 10, 11,
12
Etymology is designed to instruct students to recognize
Latin and Greek word elements thereby making the knowledge
of them an effective tool for increasing vocabulary. The
student is expected to be able to analyze words fully and to
define them. Students will also become familiar with the
general patterns of semantic change and will gain some
insight into patterns of human thought by studying word
changes which reflect something of the history of ideas. An
86 average in English is recommended.

CREATIVE WRITING EN272 Grades

Creative Writing is designed to give talented students the
opportunity to develop creative ability through written
expression. Students will be required to express their
creativity through the writing of various types of prose and
poetry. Involvement and publication of the literary magazine
is a component of this class.

AFRICAN AMERICAN LITERATURE EN362
Grades 11, 12
African-American Literature is designed to acquaint the
student with important cultural and historical themes
advanced by significant African-American authors. The course
essentially focuses on analyzing and interpreting
representative pieces of prose and poetry. A primary goal of
the course is to foster understanding and facilitate the
development of tolerance and appreciation for the rich
cultural heritage of African-Americans.

HUMANITIES EN311 Grades 11,
12
The course includes the study of literature, history,
philosophy, science, art, music, and architecture of western
culture beginning with the classical world of the Greeks and
Romans and concluding with the contemporary world. Some
outside readings required. An 86 average in English is
recommended.
