State-Mandated Tutoring (During School)

State-Mandated During School Tutoring

In Tennessee, all school districts and public charter schools are required to provide tutoring for students promoted to 4th grade through the state’s tutoring promotion pathway. This support is delivered through Tennessee’s high-dosage, low-ratio tutoring model, which is grounded in research-based best practices proven to accelerate student learning. This tutoring program approach delivers timely instruction, builds and pre-load essential background knowledge, and helps students successfully engage with grade-level (Tier I) content.

Program Highlights

  • Required for identified 3rd-5th grade students.
  • Tutoring must focus on English Language Arts (ELA).
  • Sessions should support students in reaching grade-level standards.
  • Groups must maintain a 1:3 tutor-to-student ratio.
  • Tutoring sessions consist of a minimum of two 30-minute sessions per week.
  • Tutoring must be provided for a minimum of 12 weeks each semester throughout the year.
  • Tutors must deliver sessions in person.
  • Tutoring is provided during the school day.
