Metro Memphis Urban Debate League (MMUDL)

The Metro Memphis Urban Debate League extends the school day through after-school practices and Friday/Saturday tournaments. School teams are coached by teachers and supported by volunteers to prepare for tournaments while debaters engage with various complex critical core files. Tournaments are typically comprised of three rounds of competition.

Policy debate is a research-based speech competition in which students argue for and against a resolution. Students learn and develop “cases” presenting a specific plan for solving the problem implicit in the resolution. Debaters spend time outside the school day researching policy and practicing spoken and written argumentation.

Students will debate a national resolution for an entire year. All policy debate teams throughout the United States debate the same resolution. Using the same topic all year and throughout the nation helps debaters be prepared in-depth. The resolution determines the debate area. Students will debate both sides of the resolution.
